How are all the Long Island people doing with the Nor'Easter?

Winds are finally starting to die down. Lucky my boat wasn't on the mooring although it probably would have been fine. We had gusts over 60 mph but we are high up so no flooding. Had to clean the pool out numerous times. A mess but could be worse!

I m a little surprised at the hype about what is just a simple gale. I mean.. the news report have the usual set up with clowns leaning into the winds claiming the winds gust are being recorded over 70mph. Not a single weather station along the Jersey, LI or MA coast has reported sustained winds over 40kts. Top gusts on the Jersey shore were 44kts at Seaside Heights and the NY Harbor entrance buoys.

Pretty typical with any event these days. Not sure why anyone bothers to even turn on the TV anymore.

The flooding in jersey is pretty bad, worse than any storm since Sandy I believe,

whatever the winds were measured at, this was the strongest storm since Sandy and the rain won't quit till tomorrow.
I'm sure the south shore communities of LI really got hit hard. Wind is bad but flooding is even worse, that was proven by Sandy especially when the storm lasted through several low to high tide cycles.
Windy.com app reported 60 knts. That's close to the upper limit of a tropical storm force winds @ 69 mph. Trees full of leaves, is another factor.

Windy shows forecasts, various models. Not actual data. The worst winds on LI were at the Fire island CG station this morning. 32kts sustained 41kts gust. That’s nothing worst than a summer thunderstorm

Flooding? Yes that s an issue. Especially with king tides. Heck lots of flooding down in Maimi beach this week end. At the marina, our stairs were nearly vertical last night

Another article placed that buoy from Cape May, NJ. Guess 40-44 Kts can be a bit damaging as well!

23,000 people on Long Island lost power and some are still out. I'd say that was worse than a summer thunderstorm. Nearly all of it was tree damage. The problem was that none of the trees had shed their leaves, which makes the winds much more destructive.

Not saying there was no impact, just that as usual it got hyped up using exaggerated data.

Keep in mind those in the Northeast are not like Floridaians. They are totally unused to tropical hurricane because even a cat 1 is very rare here. So that explains the reaction. Kinda like of it snows in the south. We’re used to it no big deal but in the South it’s like Armageddon!
Let’s remember that the most destructive storm in 100 years, Sandy, was “only” a strong tropical storm. That flooded things that had NEVER flooded like:
The NYC Subway system (in 100 years of operation!)
The Lincoln & Brooklyn Battery Tunnels.
Much of Staten Island and lower Manhattan.
It literally destroyed communities in low lying areas throughout NYC and Long Island. Worse than any other true Hurricane we have had.
My son was dating a girl who lived in Long Beach and they didn’t evacuate because it’s not even a Cat 1. Then they watched the ocean meet the bay. Streets full of sand, debris in the parking lot of Nickerson Beach as high as a two story building etc. her family had sump pumps running and a generator that’s what saved them! They saved their cars by parking them in their yard. We could not reach them for 2 weeks. There were boats in yards, pools and even on the LIRR tracks to Long Beach!

Many houses in the south shore have been raised up 10’ just because of Sandy.

Famous last words “barely a Cat 1”. We got lucky because our house is 85 feet above sea level but power was out for 2 weeks. Kept the house going with a 5,000 watt B&S generator had to siphon gas from the boat because you could not get gas. Now I have enough gas cans to store about 50 gallons!

Intensity can be very misleading both for surge and wind damage. A large strong TS or Cat 1 can cause a lot More surge than a small cat 3 because of how the large wind field will pile the water. Even worst in the NY area because of the shape of the coastline. Like the FL panhandle.

As winds, problems are caused because of the bands of squalls and frequent tornadoes embedded in the rain bands of a landfalling hurricane. This is what happened with Irma here in Miami back in 2017 where the center of the diminishing cat 2 to cat 1 passed about 100 miles away. Yes the squall lines and likely tornadoes caused a lot of heavy damage here on the water front. I remember a 65’ MY where the entire flybridge and main cabin roof was ripped out and flipped on the dock.
