Can't separate stripe decal from backing

I figures I'm out of luck but I'm going to ask anyway.

I have a section of stripe decal on the boat that was damaged by gas so I have removed it. I have replacement striping but the problem is the backing will not separate from the decal to allow me to apply it. It just tears away and does not come off clean exposing the sticky surface.

I've tried using a hair dryer on the decal hoping it would soften things but it did not help.

Does anyone have an ideas?

The striping is old. We've had the boat for 14 years and it came with the boat. It's been a few years since I've had to fix any stripes and they were fine then. I figure they're just too old. If that's the consensus, does anyone have any source for me to try to find something that would match what's on the boat already?
 
have you tried using a razor blade to separate it??
 
Try Beacon Graphics. www.beacongraphics.com. They carry pretty much any striping that you will need.
 
Thanks for all of the suggestions. Bruce, I haven't tried a razor blade yet, I'll give it a shot; otherwise, I'll take a look at the suggested sites.
