Has anyone dealt with Advanced Custom Canvas in Newburgh? I've heard that they have done some good work, and I'm curious if there are other folks out there that have feedback on their work.

Hi Dan,

We had the full canvas enclosure done for our boat last year by Advanced. I recommend them. They did a great job finding out what I wanted and then working to get it done. Two caveats - They are expensive; and it is a two-person shop, so you may have to wait awhile before they start working on your canvas.

They finished the enclosure the day we left for our Jersey shore trip last year, but did not have the screens done yet, but they were waiting for us when we returned. Also, we found one of the zippers very tough to zip, so they took that section back to the workshop and adjusted it. They really stand behind their work.

We're hoping they can work with Stamoid (sp?). While we were are down here in Jersey I was able to speak with Gioia canvas. They do all the OEM stuff for Silverton and a host of other mfgrs. I have to admit the owner (Don) was really personable. I was surprised how big they are yet he was willing to take the time to discuss the job himself. If you have seen their work you have to consider them the yardstick by which to measure others by. We were able to get on a couple of boats the locals have down here, and the features he puts into the enclosure are quite good.

Geo thanks for the lead. We stopped in at the Front Street Marina yesterday on the way home and Tony from Advanced stopped by to gather details.
The ugly in this whole deal is RYB gave exclusive rights to the shop here.
I don't mind traveling with the boat to get the job done and we will do that (obviously we don't have a choice). Some might say that we will have to pay extra. But, we had an invitation to leave it at one shop for a week, and the people there were extremely receptive, AND I have seen their work as it looks two years after it was done. The features they put into the job were very impressive, and I know what they paid. It was a very competitive price and blew the socks off anything we've dealt with lately. The features alone were enough to make me wonder how some folks remain in business.
I'm hopeful we can get this done locally. But we have an open invitation to wait until next year and get the job done when we travel south (stay tuned).
Don't get me wrong. Tony was extremely professional and I'm hoping we can work out the logistics but leaving the boat on the outside at Torch's isn't gonna fly far. We could leave it at the Kgn dock, or maybe Front Street on the inside, but the outside at torches? Not gonna happen. We also have good references for his shop.
But I will look into the folks at your link, thanks!

By the way we gave a yell on the way north today when we passed by since I didn't think you would hear the horn. it was great seeing you folks down at Lib Landing!

I had an appointment with Tony from Advance Canvas on Sunday morning at 9:30am. He showed up late and was waiting for me up by the BBQ's at Pennybridge. I was on my boat waiting since 9am... He even asked about me in the office, and still never showed up at the dock. I called Tony at 10am to see if he was still holding the appt. it went to voicemail. He called later that day with an attitude, saying it was his policy to meet in the parking lot/BBQ area. We never discussed that and if we did, then that's where I would have been. I can't read minds. He flat out told me we will never do business.

Dan-
we had a cockpit cover done by Seafarer canvas (Ossining) a few years back - they used the OEM Sunbrella, so it matched the bimini. Very professional and responsive. They are also a rather small shop (sounds like similar to Advanced), as they also do furniture repair and re-surfacing.

they stand behind their work, too - after 4 seasons in the sun several minor seams were unravelling; they repaired them - no charge.

Blackdog, that sounds like some interesting customer service methods!!!

I had a full canvas done last year by Seafarer in Ossining. I was very impressed and would recommend them highly. Their main shop is in Norwalk, but they do all the local work in Ossining. They are right next to the Westerly Marina. They also built a new stainless frame for the canvas which was top notch. Highly recommended.
