Has anyone tried to remove carpet that has been glued down to nonskid decking. Would like to do something different but I'm very concerned on what I might get into? I hate the carpet and would like either nonskid or maybe fake teak. The carpet gets wet and stays wet on the aft deck.

I just redid my salon floor, changed from carpet to Allure Teak. Hardest part for me was cutting around the edges since some of it extended under bulkheads. But once that was done pulling it out was farly easy. Of course mine was glued to plywood.

I guess, if the glue is strong enough, your biggest risk is damaging the non-skid when you pull it loose. You might want to check with a marine supplier to see if there is a wetting solution to soften the glue.

When I tried pulling the carpet back it left a thick brown glue firmly in place. Something to soften the glue would be helpful if not sanding might be my alternative.

you willhavea real mess left on the non skid that will take a lot of work to remove. Covering would be easier.
If you could get the mess smoothed out enough painting has worked for some.

You might try heating it with a heat gun.Be careful to not overheat.

Call around your area to janitorial supply and industrial wholesalers and ask for a d-Limonene concentrate product, be sure it is 90% d-Limonene nothing less than 90%. This is a terpene product made from oil of citrus fruits, mostly lemon and orange. It will cost about $25/gallon. It will break down the glue very quickly and will not harm the non-skid. There have been some spot shortages in certain markets due to deep freeze in FL so it may be hard to find. Floor contractors use this product to remove the adhesive when VCT tile is removed.

Mineral spirts in a spray bottle wet 2sq ft or 3 sq ft at a time wait 20/40 min. Use plastic scraper lightly.

Thanks for the ideas and the info. I'll give them a try next month when I get to the boat. Once the carpet and glue are gone I can make a determination on what's next.

the hardest part will be as said removing the resuiduale glue if im oputting down new carpet just scraring and getting the big stuff off will doo new carpet over this will work.i suppose fake teak may glue over it also. i wouldnt want to try to get to clean glass
