I was idling past the Robert Moses drawbridge and I saw what looked like a large dog swimming across the water, but then it dove down and I waited 5 or 10 minutes, but that was it, didn't see it again. Could it have been a seal?

Could have been. A decade or so ago, there were manatee sightings in the Hudson so anything is possible. If whatever it was leaving an oil slick, then it wasn't an aquatic creature. It was politician.

I dont know how far away you were, but could have been a Cormorant. They can swim pretty far underwater. Tons in the area.

I've seen harbor seals off the south side of Captree, by the bird sanctuary, but usually in the colder months. They do winter in the area.

Seals are fairly common by the Loop and Meadowbrook bridges when the weather gets cold enough. I had the same reaction when I saw my first seal. Seal cruises run or used to run out of Point Look Out. Seeing as how the seals come down from up north I would think that they would hit inlets from east to west on Long Island
