Mas epoxy recommends a compound made with epoxy resin, silica, and micro-balloons as a trowelable compound for deck fairing. After fighting with it awhile I came up with a workable mixture based on Mas's porportions. After spreding the stuff on I find myself left with a surface that is VERY hard to sand. I avoided using gelcoat to restore the deck because I have worked with it before and it was hard to sand. This mixture is supposed to cure to a hard surface while being easily sandable. I think I will ask Mas to define the word "easy" because Geez! I have been using quality 36g paper on a radom orbit sander and a 16 inch block trying to get it fair. It is coming along but only after what has seemed like countless hours and a ton of money in paper. The paper gets clogged quickly and loses its cut just as fast. It does come up very smooth once you have sanded it but wow it takes alot of sanding. Granted I am dealing with a learning curve here. I have had to apply a very expensive second coat to the deck because I simply did not get enough on the fist time. My troweling technique also leaves alot to be desired. So as you may well imagine I have had to do alot of sanding and going back to fix my mistakes. Anyone here had any experience using epoxy this way? Anything I should have done different?
