Hi,

May I ask you experts for an opinion?

I've got a spot near the bottom of the keel line where the gelcoat is all scratched away (on a three year old Cobalt), as seen in these pictures:

If I've never done any gelcoat/fiberglass repairs, should I be attempting this myself? Or is there anything about it that would make it difficult?

The exposed brown portion is about 2 inches. There are also a couple of longer but much more narrow and shallow - more like scratches.

Also, any idea what this should cost for a professional to repair?

Thanks in advance!

Looks like alot more than scratched away Gel-Coat to me.
Whatever you hit was obviously an unmovable object.
Looks like a job for a REAL Pro to me.

I agree w/ Tang. Looks a lot worse than "just a gel coat touch-up". In one photo, I think I see severed glass fibers, If that is the case, then I would be thing "fiber glass repair", not gel coat touch up.

That looks like a mighty solid hit with something that did not want to move...

Inside the scratch, is the brown background core material? or is it fiberglass? ( Looks like core, to me ).

Ask a pro about a fix.

go pro, that hole needs to be opened up and smoothed out and glass mat put in it and then re-gel coated.

Looks like it's all the way down to the core. A bit more than just a gel coat repair here to do it right. Call a pro.

Hey,

I agree, let a pro do this one and find an old piece of gel coat from a marina or boat yard. Practice on that where the stress in less.
Read up on online and have fun!
