Was taking dog for a walk at the Kings Park Psych Center and suddenly I come across fire hose dumped in the woods. I took it figuring its good around the docks? I got about 50' of the wide stuff. There was another hose there but it was the thinner hose, if anyone wants it. Same stuff, just not as wide.

Whats the best way to attach this stuff, nails ont he outside? I was think you can drill a small hole and hit the nail in the inside of the hose?
 
I use the bronze 'dock guard' nails and nail the hose onto my pilings. I put the nail on the edges of the hose and with the curve of the piling it doesn't hit the rubrail on the boat.
 
What if you are nailing it to the side of a finger pier?
 
I use 1 1/2" copper nails with large washer type heads that work well also....

You can also " ripple " the hose and nail inside the folds....to keep the nails from scratching the gel.
 
If you look at the photo I posted in this forum for the free dockboard, you can see the rippled application. I used galvanized nails in between the ripples.

I saw that ripple board. I wasn't sure how you do that as it does not seem that flexible.

Rob, I only got 50' of what looks like 6 inch hose. There is probably an equal amount of what looks like 3 inch hose still there, maybe more. I am sure noone is gonna grab it. Is the 3 inch hose worth it? I will get it. I imagine if I ripple the 50' it ain't gonna go too far. But if I have any left, its yours. Still not sure what I will do with it. I really don't need it on my poles, cause the way I am tied I never hit. It would be more for docking and even then I don't usually touch them. I was thinking along my finger cause the piece of rubber there is getting old.
 
Dave...it depends how tight you make the ripples.... to how much hose you will use. I used a piece of 1 1/2" PVC (as a mold) to wrap the hose over...to make them all equal.

The problem I had with the fire hose.....is after time the outer white cloths wears off....and under it is a black rubber....that leaves marks.
 
Hitting it helps....but thats why I put it on my poles.....so the boat hits it rather then the poles....but the sun and salt deteriorate it too..

The last few years I used the Salisbury dock-guards on the poles.....they seem to last.
