It seems they are extra extra bad this year(hundreds accumulate on my bimini), I can't even go out by my beloved Bamboo Island to hang out. I have been going to tie up at the little dock area by Oak Island, but its a private dockage and I don't want to push my luck and for some strange reason, very few greenheads there... I'm wondering why is that? Any ideas? Im really thinking about making afew of those big black box traps for next season...

Not a heck of a lot you can do...unless someone comes up with a good solution. We get sand flys even 4-5 miles off shore.

Had very high tides over the weekend that may have pushed them out of the marsh.
I read to wear light color clothing. Dark blue or black is their favorite.
No real repellent. Some use 50/50 skin so soft & yellow Listerine.
Cedar Beach to Tobay was terrible.

Bug-A-Salt 2.0

This year's crop of green flies are practically bullet proof...is there a bug-a-salt 3.0 coming out soon?

You have to go out on windy days :) I was out clamming on my dinghy on a breezy day a week or so ago and no issues. Was out again a few days later just to go for a swim when it was calm and they were horrible.

Don't laugh some old salt uses Listerine in a spray bottle and mists himself with it . Says it works ...

Just saying

Rob

I have a friend in Florida who uses the Listerine spray for the gnats and swears it works. They say you should only use the yellow original one.

In Texas they hang bags of water. Flies see themselves in the water and they get scared.
I never tried it.

we actually hung old fashioned sticky fly paper in the cockpit.....ugly but it worked.

Even as far away as I am in NE FL, flies are bad this year! We get what we call "Yellow Deer Flies." These guys are bigger than houseflies but smaller than green flies. But their bite hurts, and if you're the kinda person who festers up, Deer Flies'll do it. My wife is, and one bite finishes her for the day. Pull anchor and go home. May be festered for weeks.
Luckily for me (besides I don't fester) I've noticed they go into a crouch right before they bite. They seem to be locked down, and very easy to swat in that short moment. IF I know it landed...

Off mosquito coils works fairly well for me. I also use DAK's Greenhead Spray, but I don't think thats available anymore.

Ditto the Off coils. Underway, I find that Deep Woods Off works for a little while but have to keep reapplying it. Often seems that individual body chemistry has a lot to do with how much you get eaten by various critters. We like it when of our friends comes on our boat- she attracts the mosquitoes so they leave us alone. :-)

Then my wife would be a welcome guest! Bugs fly in from out of state to bite her!
