So..have a 1989 Bayliner Capri and want to do some sort of light bar for driving lights for night driving. I went to a local spot and asked about a "radar arch" of sorts..they wanted $1700+ for a simple 2 bar hoop. I mean dang..its 2 U shaped bars with a few connectors and a base. WOW! I know what business I should have got in! I want to mount some driving lights..maybe a spot for my antenna. Any thoughts on mounting? Or something I could make or something I can buy for a realistic price?

While for a different purpose, I have a similar project in mind. Our's is a SR 240DA (no arch, separate fore and aft biminis) that I use as a USCGAUX Facility. I'm trying to come up with "light bar" arraingement on which to mount a rotating public safety light and a short flag staff. I don't want to make any permanent alterations or cut any holes, etc. My latest brain storm (ouch!) is to get an old aft bimini frame and utilizing the existing mounts, attach a starboard platform between the 2 on which to mount the goods.
One of my concerns is possible vibration damage to the mounts/gunwale due to the added weight. I would brace (ie straps) to the forward bimini frame. Any ideas or comments? And no, no driving or docking lights! =)

Wait, the subject may be mute due to the configuration of the rear frame...it's only got 1 "upright"!!!!

you can run support straps fore AND aft, but your gonna get side to side vibration/movement with it, especially with weight.

i think youd be better off just makeing a seperate pole like your boats nav/anchor pole (if its the fold-down pole in front of the windshield. just make it higher so it isnt in line of site. that would be the simplest, and probable look the best

Thanks Mike! Hadn't considered the side to side vibrations. My Stern light is mounted on the aft starboard gunwale, is removable so the recepticle is only 3" deep and about 1" in diameter. I'm also thinking of fabricating something like you mention to fit a rod holder. Just have to play with the angle and a means of securing it.
My original thought was to make a "bolt on" arch for the forward bimini frame out of either PVC or Alum tubing.
Ah well, time for more head pains!

Thanks!

John
