I want to go from lindenhurst to Greenport next month I have done it by ocean however I hear the trip inside is a lot nicer. Is it a hard trip are there shallow spots. I am going in a Bayliner 245 , 24 foot boat Anything to watch out for.

Yes it gets shallow, best to do it at high tide. follow locals if they are heading that way or ask on radio for any locals cutting through moriches. Sometimes Sea Tow is there to guide people as well. With that size boat you will most likely be fine.
When you get to Tiana Bay, take the Abalmuth cut, it will save you some time!

You should have no problem with your Bayliner. There are 3 spots that are shallow but as long as you stay in the channels you'll be fine. There's two places in close proximity in Moriches Bay close to the Coast Guard Station and another in Tiana Bay. The inside run is nice but takes much time due to the No Wake zones...I usually go ocean one way and inside the other.

My wife and I love going on the inside. We usually stay at the West Hampton Town Dock for one night. This also helps us time the locks; look at the sticky above, it has a bunch of information.
Things to look out for…
Near Bellport heading south there is some skinny water and a narrow channel, but ok if you stay between the buoys.
Heading from Smith Point Bridge to the Moriches you will deal with lots of little fishing boats that insist of hanging on the buoys which can make it difficult to see. Have a metal garbage can cover to fend off the thrown sinkers at you if you blow past them too fast.
Must or should go as close to high tide as possible though the Moriches. There is a dog leg at the USCG station that tends to shoal up and they move buoys a bit but basically in the same area.
A couple of spots going though the Quogue canal and Tiana bay have a few shallow spots.
Off course the locks have all sorts of discussions. Again see the sticky on top.

Just west of the Ponoquogue bridge. Little bit South of the channel.

Don, I agree, I think going though that area from time to time adds some different scenery to the trip. From WHB to the locks is about an hour. The 5x5 maybe is 25-30 minutes though Quogue hawking the riches back yards. The last time I left about 7:00AM from WHB, sipping coffee and just enjoying the slow peaceful ride though. I sort of like that.

We timed it and it takes just as long to go outside as it does inside.
So you save little in time, little in fuel.
All you save is not having to run aground.
But I agree, inside is alot more scenic and outside is boring!

Thanks for all the info. I am not sure where we will stay yet as the boat has not been delivered and wont be ready until the end of May. I want this to be our first trip to try her out before we take her up the Hudson in June. I have wanted to do the inside trip for a long time and I think we will do it this time.
