I got done with my saltwater reel maintenance on the ones I brought home from my last trip to the beach. I happened to find a very old 308 I had in my parts box. It was dirty and the anti-reverse lever was not working. I tore it down, cleaned and degreased, lubed it, and put it back together. The dang thing is now working perfectly. I guess a new ultralight spinning rod will have to magically show up here at the house.

I need to go through my old fishing junk more often. I just found the original ultra light rod I bought with this old 308. Just cleaned it up and I'm good to go when I add some new line!👍

So I'm not the only one with long unused reels stashed away.
I still have the first Mitchell 300 I bought back in the early 60s plus two others my wife and I bought not long after we were married in 68. Like your 308, they have been laying in my 'old reel box' for many years but I suspect if I were to clean them they would be like new. I even have the extra spool which came with each of them.
Have fun with the NEW combo. (y)

My 300 is still in use with a cousin at his farm pond. I got it when we were stationed in Ft Walton Beach. I think it was my Christmas present either 1960 or 61. It's probably been 6 or 7 years since I last saw it so it might be retired. Somewhere I have the "high speed" 408 which is blue instead of black. I might have to try and find it.

Spooled up the 308 with 12lb braid. I plan to set it up for the admiral to use behind the house on bream and bass.

My 308 was new when my Nana gave it to me for a birthday present 55 years ago. It is still on the original ultra-light rod nd use every spring for a few stocked trout!

I bought mine when I did a camping trip to a lake in CO. I had never fished for trout and was told they would be deep and we would fish at night. I correctly guess a new ultra-light rig would be just the ticket for this deep. drop fishing and. very light bite. I ended up catching about 4 to everyone else's 1 because I could fell the bite better. Thanks for reminding me of the trip.

This thread reminds me of a fishing trip, back in the day. My buddy and I were going to the "high lakes" and our route took us through a tiny mountain town with a bar. My buddy and I stopped for an adult beverage...or four...and we played some boss dice. By the time we left the bar, he'd spent all his money on the cocktails and I was the proud new owner of his Mitchell 300. I "lent" it to him at the lake, but he had to buy it back from me when we got back home.

Did you catch any fish...note, I'm smart enough not to ask if you caught "anything". <GRIN>
