I cut my fly fishing teeth on a old South Bend automatic reel and a Garcia fly rod. Somewhere in the 70's I kind of quit fly fishing since I lived in bass and bream country, not trout. In the 90's living in north Georgia I had some trout streams nearby so I sort of got back into it. I bought a nice 3wt rig for fishing the small steams with lot of trees on their banks. Now back in Alabama with a small lake behind the house I've started to bream fish again. The 3wt is OK, but the shorter length fly rod kind of limits my distance and it does not handle bass size bugs. I just recently came across a deal for a mid to lower end 5wt that I think will be great for the little lake. If your looking or have thought about adding a rig but don't want to spend very much MidwayUSA has a deal, until they run out, on a Redington PATH2 combo that most places sell for $230 but right now you can get it for $99. Mine just arrive and it seems to be better than I expected.
On the old tackle front, I just dug out my old SouthBend/Garcia outfit, cleaned it up and dang if it doesn't seem to be in fine working order. It's a 8wt. so I'll replace the backing, fly line, and leader, and set it up as a bass rig.
