What do I need to treat the board with before glueing the carpet on? I know there is a way to coat the plywood with fiberglass to water proof it, but I don't know what product I need to use for this. Thanks for any suggestions.

Read the Weldbond website. It has been a while since I have. There might be something there.

you can lay on fiberglass if you choose, but you probably only need to coat it with epoxy in your situation

Sorry to ask such a rookie question, but what type epoxy do I use and what's the best place to get it?

Thanks

I've used Weldbond. Read their website-the part about diluting and using as a sealer. Been there-done that.

Any good epoxy resin should be good. West marine has good epoxy resins. Epoxy is sensitve to the amount of catalyst you use. Try to use exactly the amount specified. Using more won't help, it will actually make it worse. I don't think you have to dilute it if you use regular epoxy (one that is not thickened to use for bonding). Make sure the plywood is clean and very dry. I would use a stiff china bristle brush and just brush it into the plywood. Let it cure for a couple of days if you can. Epoxy can actually continue to cure for 7 days. Coat both sides and any cutouts to completely seal the wood. Use outdoor carpet adhevsive to glue down the carpet. you can trowel it on with a notched trowel on the flat areas and brush it on the areas the trowel can't reach. Home Depot sells the outdoor carpet adhesive.

Thanks for the tips. The guy I bought this boat from specifically told me not to seal "both" sides of the wood, so that if it got wet the moisture wouldn't be "sealed" inside. I didn't think that sounded right, and thus I have some boards that are rotting. Thanks again.
