My son just purchased 1986 Dusky 26 open fish.
Boat was kept in Salt Water for few years. He has removed Barnicles and is sanding old layers of paint down to original bottom.
Boat will be kept on trailor from now on. What is best method/Paint/Primer to put on bottom after sanding.?
Boat will be used in SW but always Trailerd.
Any suggestions apreciated.

I renovated my Silvertons bottom 3 years ago. It was a saltwater boat until 2004.
First step after bottom cleaning is application of a 10 mil epoxy barrier coat. For that hull it took exactly 1 kit (gallon) per coat, and 3 coats made 10 mils.
Make absolutely sure you follow the manufacturers instructions for maximum adhesion.
I had very good results with Interlux InterProtect 2000e. It was easy to work with and covered well.
Here's a few shots during and after.

During strip:

Sanded and ready for (white) barrier coat:

After barrier coat, anti-fouling, and bootstripe. Ready for launch. NOTE: I took the white barrier coat up into the wide bootstripe because the white gel below had stained. That area is now much easier to keep clean.

arks1,
Great job, must have gave you great satisfaction.

Well, that project was desperately overdue. 8 coats of bottom paint were removed. With the new bottom I picked up 2 1/2 knots at the top.

I've also been restoring this 23' boat and applied the same barrier coat to its bottom. This one lives on a trailer. So far the finish has held up fine. No bottom paint is planned.

What arks said. I would only add that, after sanding, wipe the bottom down with the appropriate cleaner.

On all my Wood boats, I never sanded down to the wood unless the original coat was peeling.
Leave the good paint holding to the wood, rough it up and paint over it. That's gonna stick good.

Sadly the last time I did any of that was in the 80's so I really don't know about any of the new Multipart paints.
If he's gonna trailer it, make sure he has a good flat surface for the boat to rest on or the 'dents' will break the paint bonds and he'll have a mess to deal with.

Most boats sit on the trailer most of their lives. So if the Trailer has Roller's there will be 'dents' which stretch the paint till it cracks.
Better to have long Timbers with large flat surfaces that fit the bottom so it has a larger "Footprint" while its on the trailer.

I wouldn't bother with the barrier coat on a boat kept on a trailer. Just sand off the old paint without burning through the gelcoat and then put on 3 coats of bottom paint. With the first coat being a different color than the last two to act as a signal for when it's time to put on new paint.

If the boat is always trailered, there is no need for a barrier coat. I would get the old paint off, using a scraper first, then going to sand paper (I 4" push scraper will make quick work of this job).

I would not try to restore the Gel at this point.

I would sand it to scuff it up, use appropriate solvent wash, and assuming the boat is white, I would put white bottom paint on and call it a project.

For the record, every boat I have owned I have brought the bottom back to bare glass to start fresh.

Thanks for all suggestions. He has sanded to remove loose paint and rolled on couple of coats of ULTRA Bottom paint.

Found a great trailer for the boat, like new and great price, but seller wont sell it without 27' POS cabin boat that is on the Trailer. Feel bad about letting the deal go, but what would we do with the very nasty boat.
Anyone want a Project Boat[:-censored] (27' Bayliner Ciera,350 GM Engine, Volvo Penta Outdrive)
Hasnt run in 3 years.
Come on guys, its FREE.

A friend of a friend has offered to take the boat off our hands, he wants the engine and outdrive. Says he will do all work required to remove the engine, outdrive, fuel tank, any fuel or oil and legally dispose of the Hull at Salvage Yard.
Now to figure out how to get all paperwork filled out so that ownership of the hull is 100% in the friends name. Dont want any responsability for disposal of the hull.
If all goes well, John and I will pick up Trailer and boat next few days.

All has gone as planned. John has a "like New" Tandom wheel Trailer and his friend has a pretty good GM350 engine that he needs.
