Just got the boat back home, all went well. While making the quick trip, I noticed that the GPS would not show detail beyond 1 1/4 miles zoom. Its a Raymarine RL70C PLus with a C-Map NT+ chip dated March '03. The chart # is 303 covering Cape May to Narragansett Bay. In order to get the zoom detail i am used to with my older Garmin 182C, is it a matter of buying a newer NT+ chip?

Thanks

Rob

I don't know. However, I would call or email Steve Senft at Jaytron Marine Electronics 941.748.1941 or andros2112 at gmail.com I have done biz with him and would hope he could help or send you off in the right direction. For more info re Steve, Google "Steve Senft Marine Electronics" Good Luck.

Did you try zooming a few more clicks past 1 1/4 miles? Some of those older plotters did not recognize all of the zoom selections.

Anything beyond 1 1/4 miles goes blank and in the corner I get a message saying "no data." Bought a new NT+ card today, the guy on the phone assured me that the older 2003 card was not as detailed. I hate investing in the unit, but it looks brand new and the radar is tied into it, along with the fishfinder and thru hull transducer. Based on what I read, I can't upgrade without replacing everything, would love to hear differently. I'm using the Navionics software on Ipad as a backup.

Thanks

Rob

That's the same unit I have, only I have mine tied into a laptop to get a bigger screen.
Mine will show no closer data if its not reading the c-map..Try cleaning the contacts on the c-map chip with a bit if 1200 grit sandpaper. Sometimes I have to do that...

You might try the inserting the original chart card in the other slot too.

I thought about that too. Will go out armed with sandpaper and your suggestion. Either way, I bought the updated chart, should be good for another 10 years.

I have the RL80 and believe it is very similar to the 70. You need to go into menu and select chartplotter. I am not in front of my unit, but can talk you through it if you want to ring me tomorrow. 917-679-1462.

Jeff, thanks for the tech support offer, I won't be back on the boat until Saturday morning, but if I'm stumped, I will give you a ring (or text). I do feel like a menu setting is not right, but I guess I will know once the new card shows up on Friday. Thanks again for the offer, much appreciated.

If your transducer, gps antenna and radar are compatible with an E80 head I have one i'm looking to sell that would be a bit of an upgrade.

Never use sandpaper on gold plated contacts. Use a pencil eraser and Alcohol wipes.

I had the exact same problem with my RL-70. Even had a Raymarine factory tech look at it. NEVER got it to zoom in past the 1 1/4 miles resolution.

Finally got fed up with it and installed a free standing Humminbird 1155 chart plotter. I used the Raymarine for depth sounding and radar only for which it worked great.

Found a setting that made it possible to zoom in further, but now it maxes out at a 1/2 mile. Hoping the upgraded chart does the trick, is not I am buying an Ipad mount. Too many skinny canals on the south shore of LI.
