I bought a 1989 36' Carver out of Brewerton, NY in the fall of 2012 that had been used as a cottage for the last 5 or 6 years. And before that not much more usage. I understand they used it maybe once a month dur to his work schedule. There were 515 hours on it when I bought it, so an average of about 20 hours/year.
It was surveyed by a surveyor who was highly recommended by a few marinas I called in the Syracuse area, so I felt somewhat okay with his results. The survey was good except for under the waterline. He showed me a few spots that were blistered and said they weren't too concerning immediately but should be corrected after the next season....meaning now. I phoned a guy I knew here and he gave me a guesstimate of around $2,000, so I negotiated a price reduction on the boat of $4,000 to give me wiggle room.
Now this fall I have been given quotes between $5,000 & $10,000. The guy who I spoke to last year can't do it because A) he has nowhere to handle a boat this size and B) the owners of my marina won't allow him to do it there.
Unfortunately I have had some health issues to deal with since September and can't really get into the issue. The owner, who is very knowledgeable, where the boat is now has pointed out a few areas that should be dealt with before re-launch, but it needs a complete re-do next fall.
This has taken a while to get to but here is my question; with the boat being 25 years old, is it worth putting up to 10K into her?
