While my boat was in the boatyard for service, I took advantage and decided to paint the broad black stripe at the salon windows. I used a 2 part polyeurethane similar to Imron. Upon applying the 2nd coat, the temp. was very warm and I found that the paint was skinning over before I had a chance to tip and not having any reducer to slow the drying time. The result is some orange peel and non-glossy areas. Not being that familiar with this type of paint, does anyone know if the topcoat can be wet sanded with 400 grit sandpaper and possibly buffed out to get the surface smooth and glossy all over?

No harm in trying but if i remember correctly Imron goofs could not be polished. sand smooth and recoat was the rule.

Might be a good question for the Hatteras owners forum. Heavy Imron experience there. Spraying Imron is the norm, haven't heard of anyone brushing it on successfully. A good auto body shop could help you too. I'd be interested in the answer myself.

real IMRON is nigh impossible to polish, unless they have changed it in the last few years. We used it on race cars and although it holds up very well, only good waxing is an option.

check with the manufacturer of your paint.

You may want to try a "test" area....start with 1000-1500 grit wet and see if it merely scratches...if so, Stop...if not you maybe able to get some shine.

otherwise a good wax may help

Thanks for the thought guys. I think I'll try Dave's suggestion and use some fine grit wet sandpaper to see if that will help. I thot I had read somewhere that Imron should not be waxed.

Years ago, I brushed a console with Imron and it came out absolutely awesome. I used the Awl Grip Awl-Cat 3 Brushing catalyst instead of the Imron activator. I believe I mixed 2-1 with T0031 brushing reducer about 15-20% but I don't recall for certain. Also can't recall if I used accelerator but it was my rule to always use the x-138 inhibited accelerator. I rolled & tipped working 3 wet edges. It was 90 some degrees that day. It actually seemed to flow better than Awl-Grip.
