What's the best solvent to use on gelcoat before applying a vinyl self adhesive tape stripe?

Wash it with Dawn first. If it comes out squeaky clean you should be good. If not, then acetone.

I've used Acetone before. It takes everything off, including a little gel coat but not terrible.

That's why I trying the least damaging thing first. Dawn will strip the wax off. I doubt there is any wax under the old stripe anyway.

How did you remove the old stripe? Wasn't there glue left on the hull?

Didn't do it yet. My boat is a 2006 so I don't expect it to come off in one piece in one pull. I have one of those 3M wheels for removing tape stripe. It works well but it's basically an eraser and it will take a lot of time.

I have two stripes down each side. Almost 150 linear feet. I can try some heat as well. Open to any suggestions on that.

I tried everything and the wheel worked the best. In fact, nothing else compared. I used a heavy duty right angle drill and the wheel eraser.
The one I used was different, it looked like this

Hey, I'm working in Jersey City but live up the Hudson. I might want to transient one or two nights at Newport...if I do, I'll look you up.

Sure! I work at Exchange Place. (Keep my boat at Stony Point Bay Marina for the winter)

How does that wheel spin if it's not round? Looks like it would be all over the place.

I used the drill mounted eraser on 40' of stripe at the water line. X 2. Stripe was about 3" wide. It wore my hands and wrists out but it all came off, glue, stripe everything.
It was last summer and it was hot. The boat yard recommended a heat gun and blade, but I already had my hard head set on the eraser.
No replacement stripes for me.
Polish, then wax, then splash.

With centrifical force, the wheel is round and has many layers.
I also opted to go with no stripe. Buffed and waxed it. This was last year, this spring, you can see the shadow of the line quite a bit so I will compound the area, buff, wax and I expect it to blend in again. I'm guessing it will take time for the sun to fade the gelcoat.

The stripe looked OK but kept getting damaged so I'm going stripe-less.

I'm in #2 harborside, 5th floor, if you know which company that is. If the sun ever comes out, I plan on walking up to your marina to check it out...I have a two hour commute so I would love to take the boat down for a two night stay over on the boat. Your place looks easier to get to then liberty landing cause I'd have to cross the Morris canal at LL.
