I will make this a two part question due to two different surfaces that require attention.

1. How to remove scratchs in wood caused by dog's feet on interior floor. The finish on this surface is Interlux goldspar.

2. The table tops and counters have high gloss finish on them, they are started to show minor surface scratchs. What is best for this type of finish??

Thank you!!

1. Lightly sand add a coat. Or perhaps just wipe a bit of finish on/in the scratchs first and see how it looks.

2. Lightly sand and apply a new coat.

Interlux Goldspar is a polyurethane varnish and is available in gloss or satin finish. Poly is a good choice for floors. The solution is to do what you do with any other varnish: sand and recoat. If you get good at varnish, the more coats you put on the better it looks.

If you want the best results follow the directions on the varnish can. Directions vary for each varnish regarding sandpaper grit, brushing thinner and cure time between coats. Usually a minimum of two coats are recommended. You will spend a lot more time with the sandpaper and blue tape than with the varnish brush. Sand between coats. Light sanding means taking off as little varnish as possible while a leaving fully sanded surface behind.

If the dog scratches are actually through the varnish and into the wood you can do a spot repair. If the wood was stained you will need to reapply a little stain. Then use a small brush to apply a coat of clear sealer followed by varnish. Spot repairs are just that: repairs. They usually don't look good until you do a full recoat. If the wood is badly scratched up you need a full refinishing down to bare wood.

You might try some soft claws or whatever they are called today. Available at pet stores and cover sharp claws.
