Is it slow no wake under the entire width of the river, North and South of the Bridge or just west of the channel?

You have to go under the center span only at no wake speed. 300 yards north and south of the bridge is a restricted zone. I have heard that is from the east shore to the west shore. I have also heard radio calls to bridge security for the latest info.

Yes. When you see all the cranes, barges, crew boats, etc you'll know why. These restrictions are from the U S Coast Guard. Rockland sheriff and westchester police are enforcing them.

I wouldn't be surprised if they end up expanding it even more

Last I heard it was going to no wake 1/2 mile on either side. I get bridge update emails automatically. I can't remember how I signed up but I'm sure it's easy enough to google.

Went under TZ last Sunday thru the main channel, they had no 5 mph Bouys up and no signs for no wake zone where up. Cruised right on thru the main channel. Probably the Bouys will be up by memorial weekend.

It was posted in the local paper so they assume that everyone knows the current laws and ignorance of the law is no excuse!

Went through yesterday. As Pocket change mentioned, there are at least 6 cranes on barges plus several other barges in the area. I was going southbound. I slowed to no wake about 3/8 of a mile before and didn't speed up till 3/8 mile after.

I saw another boat go through on plane.

From the USCG News -
NEW YORK – As recreational boating season approaches, the Coast Guard urges special caution to boaters operating vessels in the vicinity of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

The bridge is in the midst of a multi-year repair and refurbishment project that necessitates the presence of work boats, many of them moored overnight in the immediate vicinity of the bridge. The on-going construction has led to the establishment of what is known as a Regulated Navigation Area (RNA), a designated area of the Hudson River within which vessel movements are restricted.

The existing RNA is being extended to an area 500 yards north and 500 yards south of the bridge. At all times, the Regulated Navigation Area is a “Slow, No Wake Speed Zone” and recreational vessels are restricted to a speed no greater than 5 nautical knots.

During periods of greater construction activity, which may pose the risk of imminent harm to boaters within the zone, all non-construction vessel traffic may be prohibited. Such a prohibition will be broadcast by the Coast Guard and restrictions will be actively enforced as the situation dictates.

The extension of the RNA is necessitated as a public safety measure for recreational boaters because the bridge repairs and refurbishment are entering a phase of greater activity as warm weather approaches. In the past few weeks, bridge contractors have installed an additional 16 mooring balls, devices to which work boats may be tied up. The devices themselves, with or without work boats moored to them, can pose a hazard to unwary boaters, especially those going too fast. In periods of reduced visibility – after dark or when there is fog or heavy rain – the potential hazard from speeding is even greater.

State and local law enforcement agencies also have jurisdiction in the vicinity of the bridge. Marine units from the New York State Police, Rockland County Sheriff’s Department and the Westchester County Police Department are joining the Coast Guard in an effort to ensure boater safety.

Violation of an RNA is a federal offense with a significant fine as a potential consequence.

note that 500yds is considered 1/4 nm, so the entire RNA is 1/2 nm.

They should post signs and buoys to alert boaters.

They are holding back so they can create a ticket factory over there.

All of the pertinent information is posted in the Local Notice to Mariners, which the USCG provides via email free of charge. It is a prudent mariners responsibility to read and understand the LNM which contains the RNA and follow the requirements. You should also monitor your Vhf for updated or new information.

The ticket factor will only be an issue for those boat operators that are clueless and don't read the Local Notice to Mariners. Here is the link to the applicable District 1, LNM. Please read directly from the LNM and don't rely on newspaper articles to get your information. Check out pages 28 & 29. Ignore the information contained in a LNM at your own risk.

They may not be posting signs, but in reading the LNM's they will be periodically posting USCG Auxiliarist . .... Cheaper than signs!

Any one who comes apon a huge construction job like the TZ bridge while transiting the river and blows through at planing speed deserves a ticket. Anyone with half a brain would pass through at no wake speed after seeing all the equipment and barges there. You might even radio the job for updates on passing through the area.

What are "nautical knots" and are they faster or slower than aeronautical knots?

Good catch, Mike! I'm glad that was a cut 'n paste, not a retype. I would guess they are faster than campsite knots, but not nearly as appreciated as garlic knots.

Just goes to show that even the CG can slip upon occasion!!
