Shore Power Lines

"then protecting them with floor wax"

Ah, but there's the rub, Mop & Glow is not a true wax, it's a vinyl floor coating. And the cord insulation is a form of vinyl I believe. So that is why it works so well.

I used acetone and Colinite Wax. The results below:

I did this in 90+ degree heat and the acetone evaporated pretty quickly. I tried MEK but it seem a bit too agressive. Using a clean cloth made a big difference. I used about a quart of acetone and 6 micro fibre towels on 2 50' cords. It took about two 3 hour sessions. The cords were pretty bad.

My cords are 16 years old & I use acetone on them over the winter while boat is on the hard. I follow up with 303 protectant. My fear with the Mop & Glow is removing (stripping) it to clean cord next time. I believe the M & G is an acrylic based coating.

I like acetone, but never tried the M & G. I switched last yr. to a product called 'oops' bought from a TruVal. hardware, and not as strong, but worked well. treat with 303, but we do have a cabelmaster, and too slick creates a problem with the cable wheels.

OK, here's the formula for Starbrite Power Cord Cleaner. I'm going to mix my own:

Morpholine
Hydrotreated light distillate
Kaolin
Tall Oil Fatty Acids
Polydimethylsiloxane
Nepheline Syenite

As soon as I figure out what these chemicals are and where to get them for less than the cost of the commercial product. ;)

Morpholine-- Morph: to change. "o"-- a vowel to join the first and last syllable. No other information is available on "o". Line: cord or rope. = Change the line.

Hydrotreated light distillate-- Moonshine

Kaolin-- A one off Chinese derivative of Lanolin. Makes stuff soft without having to pay royalties on the name.

Tall Oil Fatty Acids-- Leftovers from Micky Dees french fries. Works in conjunction with Kaolin.

Polydimethylsiloxane-- Sexy sounding chemical sh!t that really does not exist but gets chemists a huge salary at Dow.

Nepheline Syenite-- Moth balls.

There you go. Mix it up!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wax? That's a new one.

yeah, and not a good idea. Since I have 2 power cords, they hold some moisture where they touch. The wax is yellowing and soft. I used wax because someone mentioned insulator wax. I'm gonna strip off the wax and use 303.

I moved Saint Max to a new marina last weekend. I didn't know the cords were in such bad shape. I am going to try various methods on small sections of the worst cord. I shall post the results and if the camera is working that day, I shall post pix.

More to follow.

Got to hand it to deerows, I would have replaced that cord myself, probably the Ugliest cord I have ever seen.

Nope....it'll be good forever. It'll show you are a man's man and it makes one hell of a fashion statement. You should see my lawn mowing shoes.

May I suggest, one more time, 2-4 coats of Mop n Glow? :-)

Ok, ok! I'll try Mop n Glow! But only if you suggest it one MORE time [:-banghead]

The M&G seems to slow down the re-dirtying process for one thing and a lot of what does get on there pretty much wipes off with soap and water. When it comes time to clean them again, it comes off using the Interlux or acetone or whatever. Going way back up the thread, I learned this combo from a group of professional mega yacht captains ( and Bill1 would be one of those as well) and crew, who recommended it because "we got better things to do with our time than to clean rb2@gr5t#^%$ shore cords!". Me too, though mine are approaching re-do time.

Hatteras 56MY (uses 2 50ft 240v 50 amp cords)
Boston Whaler 130 sport (no cords)

Try the GD Mop n Glow. :-)

And while am at it.

This stuff:

http://www.restorationtechnology.biz/

cleans vinyl and shore cords better than anything I've tried. While not leaving the surface tacky.

I used the Restorationtech stuff over the labor day weekend, cords came out like new. Was a bit afraid that it would leave the cords sticky, so far so good.

I'd hate to ruin an expensive $700 80ft length of cable.

"Marine Strip - Simply the finest cleaning product available!
$18.95 per quart plus shipping and handling."

Buys alot of Mop and Glow

The Mop & Glow goes on after you clean with Marine Strip".

As to the price of "Marine Strip", it may not be cheap, but it really, really works. And sometimes at the end of a long hot day, that's all that matters. :-)

It's also cheaper by the gallon.

So does Acetone at ALOT less money
