Does anyone have experience with both of these products? I just found out that Regal is recommending the Sikaflex product for most of these sealing and adhesive tasks. thanks, Alan

Regal is recommending it for the acrylic windows used on some of their boats Alan. I never said for any other use.

Sikaflex is specifically designed with extra UV protection for adhering and sealing polcarbonate and acrylic "glass"

Hey Rommer, just wanted to see if I could find someone who had experience with both products for a reliable comparison. I trust Regal as well and want to ensure that I am using the correct product for applications on my boat. Before spring I'll be resealing the cabin windows on my regal 265 and was going to use 5200 or 4200 from 3M until I saw your recommendation. thanks, Alan

I have used both products on the wooden boat.

I've actually used Sikaflex 295 as a glazing compound: glass to varnished wood frames. These seals have been on the boat for seven or eight years and they are as good as new today. Using blue masking tape on the glass and frames will make the job go easier. Sikaflex has better shock mounting qualities for your glass than 5200.

Sikaflex gets used on the boat a lot for general bedding and sealing. Varnish sticks to it extremely well, and most paints do well with it.

3M 5200 gets used for jobs where I need strong adhesive strength in a bond that is not subject to a lot of movement. Essentially, I use it like permanent waterproof glue. 5200 is more rigid and more prone to stretching damage than Sikaflex.

Yzer, if you are talking about being on the boat for 7 or 8 years, I'm wondering whether you are talking about the same product. Sikaflex changed up their lineup a couple years back. The old sealant that used to be the best was their polysulphide based product. I can't remember but I think it was actually 231. 295 is just another polyeurethane so its properties really should not be that different from 5200 or 4200. The closest comparison to the old sikaflex polysulphide is 3M 101.

I don't have the sikaflex with me but it has the same class of chemicals as crazy glue. isocyosomething or other. Is that a polyeurethane? (Chem was ALONGGGGG time ago!)

Darn it, Ghost, you are absolutely right about this.

Back then I was using Sikaflex 231 for below waterline seam repair (those seams are still in place.) I was also using Sikaflex 240 for other jobs including deck seams. Sika 240 is probably the same thing as the new 291 LOT polyurethane, which I have used for deck seams and general sealing for the last 3 or 4 years.

I can't remember whether I used 231 or 240 for the glass windshield glazing. It could have been either one. It's all under several layers of varnish now.

Sikaflex now recommends the 295 UV or 296 for the glass applications.
