Does any body know what it cost these days and can you recommend someone. I've been up to the boat 3 times each time with a bigger sander and I seem to be getting nowhere fast. I don't have the time to give it. I was hoping to do 1/4 of the boat per visit it seemed reasonable at least until I started doing the work, I give up. I got a price to have it sanded and I may go the route but I would like to compare.
Thanks

FWIW, a few years ago I needed the bottom paint removed as I was going to fix some gelcoat blisters, epoxy seal and barrier coat. Burnt out an air compressor and 2 DA's and never finished a 1/4 of it. Called in someone to sandblast (or in your case a soda blaster-I wanted to really score the surface and open up anything that may need fixing) and never regret it. I sanded with an electrical DA with 80 grit AFTER the blast which was so much easier. Sanding is such a PIA and boring!. After I did the barrier coats, I used ablative paint so hopefully, never again. I feel your pain!

I went yesterday and tried a palm sander with 80 grit it didn't work. I went out and bought a 5" orbital sander and 60 grit it worked much better but I would take me until Fall to finish. Anything more aggressive I would be afraid would damage to gel coat. So it's time for plan B.

My 37ft boat was media blasted this winter at a price of $1,000. This also included all the running gear. the barrier coat was left intact, therefore only needing 1 coat of barrier coat, 1 signal coat, then 2 coats of ablative this season.

Dave VictoriaMarie from our marina had his bottom done last season I'll give him a call. let you know.

Thank you please let me know. I spoke to the guys at our marina and I got a price to sand and prep for paint and that was just under $1000. I want to see what my options are.

Thanks again
Dave

Dave, when I read your thread about removing your bottom paint, I wondered when you would start this thread.

Last year, my two sons and I spent many weekends at the marina under the boat with paint scrapers removing 18 years of bottom paint. What a pain-in-the-butt job!!! Not to mention how dirty it is - but worth it once it's done.

If you can get them to do it for under $1000 - JUMP on it!! Otherwise, you might not be in the water until Augst.

I got a quote today for $2450 for Tristate. I told him thanks but no thanks. I got a price to have it sanded for under $1000 Ready to paint I think that's the way to got. The bottom has been done a few years ago it just isn't bonding well so I want to make sure it's sanded then prepped before I paint. You know what they say it's a boat Sh*t happens. What's next is what concerns me.

Dave,
If you take it down to the Fiberglass I would recommend doing a barrier coat. I am not sure on your '96 but on my '01 it came barrier coated from the factory. Give Carver a call.

You will need approximately 1 1/2 -2 gls for one coat of Micron Extra. I would definately suggest using the ablative pait. Cost more but worth it. You do not need top worry about painting every year until it really needs it. I mostly do touch ups after the initial paint job.

i tried to take 13 years of bottom paint off my first boat. i spent way too long with sanders and chemicals andstill had it only about one third of the way done. finally, i went to the local paint store where a whole bunch of "painters" queue up each morning looking for work. $150 later, the job was done. should have done it much sooner.

I don't know what it came with but the bottom has been redone and looks to have been barrier coated. It looks as though some areas weren't prepped well and the paint didn't stick well that's why I want to sand it down, even it out and prep it better for new paint.

Starry Night please let me know when you are ready to uncover I would like to see the job they did covering it because your wrap held up, I've been keeping an eye on it and it still looks as good as the day they put it up.
