Source for Teak

Do any of you have a good source for Teak wood? In an earlier topic I was asking for a source for prefabricated drawers. What I have found so far seems rather expensive.

I am a capable wood worker and have the tools to make these myself. My normal source of quality woods, Hall Lumber Co. in Mayodan, NC, does not carry teak.

How about a wood that could be finished to resemble teak? Any ideas there?

It seems that "Iroko", sometimes called Aftican or Nigerian Teak, is a substitute for Teak.

Has anybody used this? It is much cheaper than teak at $6.00 per board foot for 4/4 wood.

Intercity Lumber in Tampa has teak, they stock it rough and will plane it to any thickness you want. Whether it would be worth shipping it is your call. ph 813 626 5232 They may know of someone in your area.

I've had good luck using Minwax CHERRY stain on ordinary pine or "white wood". It's certainly not
teak but color-wise it's a pretty close match.

Thanks. I will be in Tampa for a couple of days in about 6 weeks. I will call them and see what they have. We usually drive the wife's car on trips because of fuel economy, but this time it may be worth it to take the MDX.

ML Condon, Stormville, NY is just a few miles from me, they carry all types of marine lumber, # is 845-221-8966. If you call and like what they have I can inspect/select and help with shipping if need be. Good luck with the project.
 
Thanks George. I really appreciate the offer. I will probably go with the Iroko, because of price difference, or the place in Tampa. I have telephoned the Tampa place and they seem very helpful. As I will personally be there in early
April that would be good. They are just down the Brandon toll road from where my son lives.
