SO whats the game plan for the summer ?

I'm figuring on after daughter graduates High school in June heading east for the rest of the summer. Destination unknown.

Rob

Riverhead month of August.
Nothing else planned.
Thinking trip right before August, maybe up hudson, down east river and around north shore to riverhead.

You are always welcome on the Hudson either to come to the resort or the local anchorage one of us would be happy to guide you in safely.

I did a Hudson trip with my old boat in September of 2015 and can't wait to do another one with this boat this year. I went straight up to Kingston last time, stayed there overnight and then went south for another overnight in Liberty Landing. The only thing that rivaled the scenery were the numbers on my depth finder. I think we're going to try to do 4 nights this time with a stop at either the Culinary Institute or West Point area then continuing the next day further up towards Albany, a third night at either Newburgh or Haverstraw and then a fourth night in Jersey.
Those who haven't done it before should seriously considering going up the east side of Manhattan to Spytun Dyveil and then coming back down along the west side.

Our plan was maybe do it before we head east for August.
So we would go up Hudson and down east river and into sound.
Check out Hudson and some spots in Conneticut.

Early planning still

Spytun and dyvel was no joke. Between the train bridge and all the barges it was not fun.... Seeing the stadiums up close was cool.

If you came in to the Harlem River through Spytun Dyveill and went directly to the sound you'd miss the East River. The Harlem River has some sights to see. There are a few spots where it doesn't feel like you're in the City.
Going under the East River Bridges is pretty cool as is passing by the UN so you may want to detour to bypass the sound, cruise down the East River to at least the Brooklyn Bridge and then turn around and head north again back up to Hell Gate.

The bridge operator responded quickly and we only had to wait about 5 minutes for him to swing the tracks open. There may be some traffic but there was also some rowers from Columbia University and a couple of Kayakers that we encountered along the way so it wasn't too bad at all.
I was lucky enough to time going through the East and Harlem Rivers at slack tide when it was like a lake. I was going slow so we could take in the sights and keep an eye out for debris. We really didn't see anything floating in the water though.
I worked in the South Bronx back in the 80's when the River had all kinds of crap floating in it. I was surprised to see how much it has cleaned up since then. I still wouldn't recommend it for swimming, but there were no fridges or cars floating in there. We actually saw a guy fishing on the Bronx side up around the Kingsbridge area.

The Spuyten Duyvil bridge can be hit or miss. They usually keep it open unless a train is approaching.

One time I waited 90 minutes for it to open! Most times, it's either open, or opens after a short wait.

We plan on going up the Hudson to Lake Champlain in August. That will break in my new engines.

The only time I had a long wait at the Spuyten Duyvil was due to a repair being done. This said if you just miss the opening it could take 15 to 20 minutes. I usually don't wait long maybe 5 to 10 min and I have driven thru without waiting at all many times. It's a nice ride. While I enjoy seeing the Statue of Liberty I'm not a huge fan to the traffic and chop looping around the Battery.
