Trojan 440 Upgrades, Fixes and Ideas

Good job on the swim platform Allen. Can't wait to see pics of it mounted.

Also looking forward to seeing photos of Dave's new seating. I can not wait until I can afford to have mine done. All my money this year is going to the bottom and running gear.

I do have some small projects to do before I haul out this spring and start the major stuff. I don't think I will be getting started until February though. Just do not have the desire to be cold this winter so I have resolved myself to stay indoors.

It's too cold to do anything, can't wait to see Dave's seats as well.
What exactly are you doing with the running gear John?

I have a leaking Norcott seal on one side and a drip while running from the prop shaft trans seal on the other side. So I a pulling the shafts and replacing both seals on both sides. While I am at it I m going to do the cutlass bearings, tune the props, have the shafts checked and service the rudders. I also plan to strip all of the old bottom paint and start fresh. On the inside I am replacing all of the battery cables and possible replacing one of the alternators with a HO. I am also pulling the heat exchangers, including the genset and having them cleaned out. While I have the genset out of the hole I am putting some sound deadening in there and painting it. There are a few other things I want to get done to but those are the big ones.

Wow, that's a significant amount of work... I'm sure it'll feel nice whan all of THAT gets done!

I agree I didn't notice how much you have on your list. This is a pretty major deep pocket list! I did my bottom a few years ago and it is still in good shape. My props have been done a couple of time but since I changed marinas I have not had a need to service them. I have been lucky my Norcott seals have been holding tight. The heat exchangers is something I would think about but temps are perfect and don't see a reason at this time.

How are you planning to strip the bottom?

Best of luck with all these project!

It is a big list. I just hope I can get it all done. I will be doing the majority of the work myself so it will probably be on the hard all of April and May. My plan is to move it to FL in the fall so I want to make sure all the work I can do is done before it goes down there. I would like to be done by Memorial weekend but I am not going to rush it.

1. Have Allen fix my radar arch

2. Have Bob re-do my cockpit upholstery

3. Install turbo gauges, transmission temperature gauges and racor gauges

4. Fill cooler with beer and ice

5. Go boating.

It's to frigin cold... My brain can't think about what I need to do on the boat this year.

But I have my list from last year....
Continue with cockpit vinyl.
Install my Raymarine head unit, camera, wire.
Install new exhaust vent hose.
Have new carpet installed in the Salon.
Create a new aft curtain enclosure.
Start on Mikes Interior....thanks for reminding me!

Let's see how much I get done. Waiter....another cocktail please?

1. Lift the arch and tilt it backwards (Hogan as well)
2. Have a leak from one of my swim platforms pistons, got to fix that.
3. Prop scan
4. New ac in the sloon
5. Finish my new boat name design and platform.
6. Install my swim platform
7. Fix my tachs
Other than that noting else :-)

Well I guess my list wasn't big enough so I decided to start redoing old projects. I didn't like the way my dash panel was holding up so I pulled it out and I will redo the entire project. The carbon fiber did not hold up to the UV rays and started to fade, I tried everything to restore the finish but decided to just remove the effected panels and simply paint black. In addition I am redoing another section that didn't hold up well when I'm finished it should all look like new. The only thing left I would like to upgrade would but to replace the steering wheel. Has anyone here replaced theirs and if so I would like to know if there is anything special as to the shaft size that I need to be aware of before I order a new one?

The wheel is starting to chip and peal on the collar. As for the size I'm assuming it is a 3/4" shaft and a 3/16 key but not really sure and would hate to order something that doesn't fit.

I have looked at many wheel and none are nearly as expensive as the one you picked out.

Something simply but new and fresh looking maybe stainless but I'm open to anything that looks nice.

I called today to check on my seats and I was told they are ready when I am, I wish I was splashing next week!

I wish you were splashing next week to Dave!!!!!!!

Can't wait to see the seats.

I was splashing on the highway all the way to Baltimore. Staying here for the night and tomorrow we keep going towards NC, Friday FL.

While this is probably not a specific Trojan problem I thought I would bring it up for everyone to check if they have not before. I was talking to a friend this morning about spring projects to do. He has a 96 440. He said his major project is to pull his rudders and rebed the mounting bolts. He was checking them at haul out for the winter and noticed that one was loose so he checked the other one. The other one was not loose but the head was missing from one of the bolts that go into the bottom of the hull and hold the rudder. I check mine each haul out to see if they are loose and have not had a loose one yet. But I have never really looked at the bolt head to see if they are all there. Something I will be checking when I get pulled in April. I may just pull, inspect and rebed them on GP. For those of us that always have water in our bilge no matter what we do, this could be an entry point.

It seem like a common problem, I had an issue with one of my rudders so I opened all the boots, some were very lose. Got to redo the all the mounting bolts.

I replaced all the mounting hardware last year including the bushings which I had to have made, they seem perfect now. I have never had a problem more of preventative after Sandy the insurance adjuster agreed it would be a good idea to do an R&R to ensure everything was in good shape before launching, the best part was they paid!
