Tugboat Sinks Near TZB

I can understand how an inexperienced boater could hit a barge at night but not a tugboat captain. Very sad.

Obviously way more to come. Fell asleep was what I was thinking. Two dead, one still missing. Most likely still in tug. The still missing man spoke to friends prior to leaving and was worried about the trip due to heavy currents expected. I know nothing about a tug but never thought about currents and how difficult navigating might get. It seems that they knew they were going to hit the barge ahead of time but could not correct course. Folks working on the barge braced themselves for impact and it has been reported the Captain jumped onto the barge at impact but jumped back into the water to rescue the two others and did not make it. The victim count since construction has started is now 5. Two others due to inexperienced boating, alcohol and poorly lit barges. This accident is still very much TBD.

I doubt they fell asleep there were three tugs on the barge. One aft and one on each side. It looks like one got pinched.

This morning - They are raising the tug with a deceased crew member on board
Just passed by on train and it was a somber sight
USCG and others in place getting ready.

Very sad - lets all be SAFE out there.

I would have thought with all of the cranes already on site, they could have used one of those to get the poor family's member back. The largest crane in the country "Left Coast Lifter" is on site which could probably pick up 10 tugs. I suppose a lot has to do with liability.

It's a shame it doesn't show the events leading up to the sinking.
