1989 2357 Montego Reverse

When I put the control forward from neutral the gear engages immediately. Going into reverse I have to pull the lever back at least 1/3 of it's travel before it engages.

Is this normal operation or am I looking at an adjustment issue?

This caused some tense moments yesterday while launching in a fairly crowded marina.

It sounds like the cable slipped and needs adjusting, but I would re-post on the Engines Forum
