I'm looking at a 88 searay with 1100 hours. The owner tells new that the 1000 hour service has not been performed. Can anyone give me an idea as to the cost of this service.

Bob is an old-timer...he gets the Oldtimerz break. Steve...I wish I could offer some advice, but I'm a gasser..and not only when it comes to boat engines (and thats another story ya prolly dont wanna hear about), but I would think 1100 hrs would be close to break-in service on diesels and would be less than a grand. The only thing I would worry/consider is that 1100 hrs on a 26 yr old boat is the lack of hours on the engines-42 hrs/yr is low as diesels like to be run. Do have an oil analysis done and spend the bucks to have a thorough engine analysis done by a competent mechanic. Diesels are twice (if not more) the cost to work on by a mechanic..if you can even find a competent one to work on it. JMHO. Good luck with however you proceed, and give us an update what happened(s).

Have a CAT mechanic inspect the engines for valve adjustment and blowby numbers both of which are checked at the 1000 hour check.

Steve - Maintenance on those engines goes by intervals of #'s of liters of fuel, or hours run, or years in service , whichever comes 1st.
In the case of that boat ...if... it is the original engine and the hour meter is correct since new, many 1000 hr and other interval servicings should have been done in terms of year intervals. The "1000 hr service" was apparently due in 1990.
Perhaps best to ask to see paperwork on what work actually has been done since '88 or when engine was new, and look at past oil analyses. If it gets to that point, are you going to have an engine and hull survey?

I can tell you the 600 hr service on my Cummins QSM-11's was around 8 grand. Obviously different engines but my recommendation is to speak to a certified Cat shop and understand what that service entails and if it is extensive, use a certified mechanic.

You did not say what kind of CAT 3208 it is. This will affect costs, but I am going to assume it is a 375 or 435 TA. You also did not say what has been done, but since the previous owner went past 1000 hrs I am going to assume you need the following:
You must have the aftercoolers removed and cleaned and pressure tested. If they show any sign of starting to leak, they must be replaced $$$.
You need to have your valves adjusted - all 4 banks which is done easiest with the aftercoolers off. You will also need to flush and replace your closed cycle coolant. They should replace all belts at 1000 hrs.
They will inspect lots of stuff and maybe replace some hoses. They will inspect your injection system but IIRC that is a 2000 hr service item.
Then of course they will also do all standard annual items such as impellors oil/filters.
If nothing is wrong and these are only standard 1000 hr service items then it easily costs $8K -10K depending on where you are and how well they know CAT 3208s.
