I am picking up a 42 SeaRay Aft cabin 1988 model What cruising speed can I expect for reasonable
Mileage and at what RPMs
Just a general idea would be a help
Bert

Uh...what engines does it have? Kinda hard to give you an answer not knowing that info.

Sorry mate. Still not specific enough for me.

Gas will burn more than diesel. 2 cycle diesels will usually burn more than 4 cycle diesels.

The bottom condition and whether or not it is properly propped will come into play as well as winds and tides.

As I said earlier I only want a guesstimate I understand that know one can give an exact estimate

Okay, I'll bite. As someone who owns a totally different boat, but has been on the water for quite a few years:

454 - Must be gassers.
42' Aft Cabin - heavy.

I'd guess 17-20 knot cruise (with clean bottom, clean running gear in good condition, etc.). Roughly 30-some gallons per hour?

That's just a guess.

I have a similar sized Mainship probably about the same weight at WOT with a perfectly clean bottom, and props 30 knots she burns almost 60gph. That's not cruise at cruise 24 knots 34gph it gulps gas. I'd have stuck with the 38 Ocean Alexander if I were you (it's in your tag line). I have 8.1L HO injected circa 2006-07 motors.

Thank for the response yes it is a gasser with an aft cabin
I'am picking it up for a friend
and yes I am keeping my 38 Ocean Alexander

I used to have a 38' Carver aft cabin with 454's. Cruised around 15 knots about 3200 RPM's. At that speed, got around .4 miles per gallon. Slow down to hull speed, around 7-8 knots, and MPG jumped to about 1 mpg.

BoatCrazy just voiced my first thought!
My guess is around 0.5 NMPG at around 20 KT, 3200 RPM and all that's really going to depend on the condition of bottom and props.
But SR's are styled to look like they're going faster than they actually are.
Glad you're keeping the Alex.
Please let us know how the SR runs out and what the fuel/speed results actually are!

Friend shouldn't let friends purchase a 42' aft cabin gasser! I'm just poking some humor being I have a boat that's worth pracrically -0- given it's size and power train.
There were members here that tried to warn me, but when I did my refit gas was under $2.00 a gallon and I knew nothing about gas powered 40+ footers.

the manufacturer should be shot for even offering that combination.

I had a friend who had that boat, it burned 42 gallons an hour and when gas hit 3.50 a gal the first time he practically gave it away. The good news is he has a bigger boat now but with diesels. I do remember him saying the boat was fine as long as you weren't in a rush to get anywhere.

Brite Idea said some really big words. It comes down to "HOW Do YOU Want to USE the Boat?" Weekend Retreat at the Marina, Dock Parties, Short Runs to Raft-Ups, Coves, Friends' Marinas? Sounds good. Distance cruising, not so much...

RWS my boat was offered with either 315 Yanmars or 454 gassers. The vast majority of 1993-1999 Mainship 40SB's were sold as gassers. The re-sale value between the diesel version and the gas versions have almost a $75k spread.
I can personally attest that my boat is an excellent "Dock Mary".

Billy: I am really surprised at your numbers 24 /34 is .7 NMPG. That is better than diesels???????

My Alex is looking better all the time. I didn't purchase the boat I only offered to help bring it from Detroit to Toronto ON. a distance of about 250 miles then there is almost a day getting through the Welland cannel The new owner thinks he can do the entire trip in 2 days ,that's when I bailed out
It will be interesting to hear his comments when the trip is over
Thanks again for all the input
