Amazing Rogue Wave experience

Billy III reminds me of an 'old time Ham' with all the walls full of excessed Gov't Radio equipment, re-tuned and re-engineered to do evil things to the SeaGull's flying by his transmitter.
He could talk to a Native living under a Coconut tree.

I have a wireless router and can't make contact with it here in my own bedroom.
Billy III should be speaking to Congress on our behalf!

Kurt we don't seem to have the speed issues in NJ and NY that our southern members report.

Yeah, I have no idea what that's about. Beacon Wi-Fi at Florida marinas completely sucks. And even when it's a marina-run network it usually sucks there. I haven't had much success with MD-based marina Wi-Fi either.

With that being said I still think anyone who spends a fair amount of time on board a boat should have WiFi in addition to a good cellular data plan.

I 100% agree. I would add that a boat that needs access should not only have a Wi-Fi amp and external antenna, but also a cellular amp and external antenna. I have both 3G and 4G cellular amps (and then there's the whopping 9kbps throughput of the satellite phone :-)

Kurt I have an ongoing discussion with Ben Ellison over on PANBO about communications for cruisers.
He, I and others agree the 3 tier approach is the best approach. With that being said WiFi using a product similar to the ROGUE or building your own WiFi system, Cellular, using a quality 3G/4G router with external amplifiers (direct connect type) and a wide band 700MHz through 2.7Ghz external Omni antenna (like what you and I both use) and some form of satellite communications even the low data rate new DeLorme in-Reach using SMARTPHONE to tether it to a smartphone is the ideal set up for cruisers.
Unfortunately I made the mistake of purchasing a Fleet Broadband phone (an FB150 Skipper) to only have INMARSAT drive the cost of admission out of reach for my use and many other occasional users. I often wonder if the FB150 would still do the 505# emergency call since I deactivated the plan? I am not counting on it.

Thud I have converted numerous pieces of military microwave equipment for my old main hobby Ham Radio.
My new primary hobby is boating, ham radio is still a hobby but #2 on the list.

My Rogue just showed up and within a few minutes I had it setup and working of coarse it currently in my living room and I just picking up my neighbors WiFi but tomorrow it will be on the boat and I can't wait to see how it works there and see what I pick up in the area.

Not to mention it came pre-configured thanks to Billy!

Dave let me know how the Tundra router works out for you. It's possible with the correct USB cable that you can use your cellular smartphone data through it as well. Just check the Tundra website link in the routers administration control panel for updates. It is a failover router which you can control once you get used to the GUI.

Bill so far so good it's very cool. I change the name to the Audrey TOO which is the current name and I set up a password as well I haven't look into using the cellular at least not yet. I'm really curious if I will pick up and unsecured network near the marina I may be able to see my cameras after all this would be very cool I would never abuse it, it's more a novelty and at this point a challenge to make something work.

Bill -
I have not been successful in getting Netstumbler to work. Downloaded it to four computers and each time Netstumbler says it can't see any network adapters installed.
I did download similar programs, inSSIDer3 and Xirrius and I used them to optimize my wifi channels...very helpful. (you were correct about avoiding use of channel 6).

After reviewing your comments, doing some research, and noodling for a while, I am considering replacing the linksys router (pointed out the window toward the anchorage) with the following:
http://www.l-com.com/wireless-network-ubiquiti-bullet2hp-80211b-g-high-power-access-point-us-version
http://www.l-com.com/wireless-antenna-24-ghz-14-dbi-flat-panel-antenna-12in-n-female-connector
http://www.l-com.com/wireless-network-ubiquiti15vdc-08-amp-power-over-ethernet-injector

What do you think?

Thank you again X 10

Jim

Jim that's basically the equipment I was going to lend you to see if your link to Tices Shoal would work.
Your air card may not be compatable with Netstumbler funny it works on every laptop I have let me find you another program I'll post a link here later this morning.
Bill

I believe that Ubiquiti Bullet is actually the Rogue Wave.

Bill can certainly correct me if I'm wrong, but 4 miles seems a bit much. While certainly possible with clear LOS and two high-quality directional antennas (along with quality APs and quality amps), but I do not think you're going to have much luck since you're talking about a moving platform on one end (the boat) that will require an omni antenna. You -might- be able to blast signal to the boat from your house, but getting signal back to the house is going to be a real challenge.

Jim, I just downloaded this program in the time it took me to write these posts. It looks like a better tool then even Netsumbler.
I'm running it now.
Bill
inSSIDer is the download you want.
Make sure you have your WiFi card enabled and make sure after you open the program you click start in the upper right corner of the display to run this program.

That's the one I downloaded. When installed, the desktop icon says "inSSIDer3". Works good.

You should have a list of SSID's what channels have the most SSID's with the strongest RSSI?
Look at the 2.4 tab only.
Bill

Jim let the program run for a few minutes, then save the file. Then can you send it to me at b.lentz(at)certifiedrf.com ?
Then I can review it.

You are correct Kurt, but the ROGUE has proprietary firmware and is set up as a bridge router. The Bullet would be programmed as an access point. I agree it's a long shot that's why I want to lend Jim the equipment before he purchases anything and finds out the link isn't reliable. There are so many variables and overcrowding of the 2.4 WiFi band is the biggest stumbling block in our area.
Bill

The good news is I just checked and Verizon 4G LTE is certainly an option in that anchorage. I don't even think an external antenna would be needed.

This wouldn't be cheap, but would enable a sectional antenna to be used on the boat (replace satellite dish - not included anyway - with Wi-Fi sectional/directional antenna):

Kurt I can understand Jim wanting to use his home WiFi over VZW LTE. Yes the area is saturated with Verzon 700MHz LTE. I use LTE when I can't reach a good access point and while the boat is in motion (cruising).
A directional antenna should only be used at his home I have suggested a 120 degree panel.
The boat needs an Omni or he will spend more time redirecting the antenna then surfing the .net.
I know your kind of joking showing the dish, they are horrible for ship to shore WiFi, great for point to point fixed wireless backhaul.
