I feel like an old salt tonight. Spliced 8 plait to my anchor chain using a back splice. My first time working with 8 plait.

That's good looking lace work. But....You forgot that little 'shiv' or the metal piece that rubs on the end of the Chain.
Tsk tsk tsk....contact one of us ol' grey hairs next time.
Now you have to do it over and include all the parts n' pieces.
It looks like you enjoyed what you were doing anyway. :)

Yes, a thimble would prevent chafe but some windlasses will reject them. Just be sure to check the splice for chafe frequently.

No, he doesn't have to do it again. As Les mentioned, in order to go through the wildcat claws on a windlass you can't use a thimble at the line/chain interface.

While I would have made the splice a bit longer, just keep an eye on it and you should be fine.

Hey Cap'n Bill! You're the first on here I've ever heard call that thing a wildcat! Must be some REAL salt in your blood!

I agree, a thimble probably won't go through the windlass. Anyway, if the splice is TIGHT on the chain, it won't chafe.

Remember y'all, that Poly Stuff wont take much 'Chafing'! Not like a real Rope!
That's why they invented that little metal doober!

On my anchor rode, it's the SIDES of the splice that take the beating, going through the windlass.
