another boat explosion

Thank goodness the injuries were minor. What bothers me is that the Dad had to throw life jackets to all the kids. Why weren't they already wearing them? Children 13 and under should not be on a boat, especially a moving one, other than being in the cabin, without wearing life jackets. Hy

Well maybe they're were in the cabin...
Or they knew how to swim...

Most kids over 6 or 7 do, that 13 year old arbitrary cut off is dumb

Install a fume detector, remove the cover over the gas tank or sending unit, check the hoses, fuel pump and carb or FI. But most important of all

SNIFF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT BEFORE STARTING....
I rarely if ever see people with gas inboards doing that. I once asked the gas attendants at a couple of gas docks about this and they had no idea. None. So I gave them a little safety lesson and said, 'if the captn doesn't check for fumes, you might want to step as far away as you can when he starts it up'......

These are always tragic because some one gets hurt and in this case kids.

Pulling away from fuel pier is one common time to blow up.
I wonder if the engine quit because the fuel fumes were too rich?
Then with a bit of ventilation, the mixture leaned out just in time to blow up.

Agree with the all reliable mark 1 nose to be the deciding factor.

I do not like fueling with a bunch of people aboard either. I have paid for a lot of gas to avoid fueling with guests aboard.

The key is prevention and education. In this case, as often, fueling alone, life jackets Etc Would not have helped

If you have a gasser and do not have a fume detector,
If you have a gasser and do not run the blowers before start and at slow speed,

YOU ARE AN IDIOT!

It is mind boggling that gas boats are allowed to be operated without fume detectors and can even pass USCGA inspection. These things work and unlike your nose they are down there and operating at all time.

I have to agree and the sad thing, was the clueless incredulous looks the gas dock attendants had on their faces when I told them this. It was clear to me no one ever told them about the risk there.
I'd been worried about a gas leak under way so I installed the fume detector this year. Next boat's gonna be an OB for sure though. Tired of I/O maintenance in salt water.

I had a fume detector on my last boat. One time, it literally saved my life. That alone was worth the cost!!!!
