We're looking to go to Cuttyhunk and then on to Vinyard Haven Harbor from Westerly, RI area starting Monday.
We're hoping to get a mooring in VH inner harbor. I talked to the Harbor Master today and he tells me there has not been one mooring that has gone empty overnight all summer!

Has anyone been there recently? What's the best time to try and arrive for a mooring? Morning? Has anyone anchored in the outer harbor there? How bumpy is it?

Was at Vineyard Haven Marina a few weeks ago. If the wind is from the N-NE it can get rocky in both the outer and inner harbor. Every request we heard on the radio for a mooring seemed to be handled without a problem. Most requests where late in the day as people arrived. Nice area, we liked it a lot.

Oak Bluffs is right around the corner if you get stranded. Nice and protected. But as Rommer said. Its a pretty unprotected harbor from the North. Ferry's moving around frequently also.

Call Liz rb2@gr5t Vineyard Haven Marina, (508)693-0720 or VHF Ch. 09. Also the Vineyard Haven Harbormaster is (508)696-4249 also VHF Ch. 09
Don't forget Vineyard Haven is a dry town. No beer, wine or liquor is available on land. Restaurants are BYO. It's strange, you can't get a beer in the Black Dog Tavern. Oak Bluffs is not the same nor is Edgartown. Plenty of places to get your daily ration of rum if needed.
