I want to use two coats of ablative paint and then not paint again next year. My marina is recommending Aquaguard Ablative. It's water based and can be dry without a problem.

Anyone have any experience with it?

I have used this stuff exclusively on my boat for 8 years when I was keeping it in Longport and Ocean City. It worked great, was safe to work with, easy to clean up, and lasted a long time. I would recommend 2 coats the first year, and then one coat per year. I don't know why more people don't use this stuff...

Bill, I've been using for 4-5 years as well. I used to sell to the company. The only problem I had was with application. No matter what type roller I used; it would leave tiny bubbles on surface that either require rolling over same area many times until they were eliminated or use the brush tip method. I finally found a method that applied a smooth surface with no bubbles. I ended up using a paint pad.

Used it one season on my last boat. It was terrible. Had to get hauled mid season to clean all the crap off. My advice, go with Pettit Ultima or Interlux Micron.

Thanks. I wonder why Ken's results were so different. I have Petit Horizons on there now. There is slime and growth on the bottom afger the boat sits at the dock for a week but it comes off when running the boat. I noticed no decrease in performance at the end of the season. My understanding is that ablative paint will allow growth, but it won't stick as opposed to the copper based products that kill growth.

Ablatives also have high copper content. I use Pettit Ultima SR---lots of copper.

Possibly Ken wasn't using boat enuff for the ablative property of the paint to do it's job ? Both ablative & hard epoxy paints use copper (cuprous oxide) as the toxic anti-foulant. It's just that the ablative wears away exposing fresh copper and prevents multi coat build up of paint year after year. The copper will not prevent slime or grass growth. That is prevented with a biocide such as Ciba's Irgarol

Interlux calls the antislime Irgarol and Pettit paints with the antislime are marked "SR". Seems to work pretty well. Used to get a lot of slime here in the Ohio River especially when water temps are about 85 degrees. Since I've been using this paint, slime doesn't seem to be a problem.

I decided to go with Petit Horizons. That's what I have on their now and the boat came out of the water pretty clean at the end of the season.

It wasn't because I wasn't using the boat enough. It was because the paint is garbage. My boat never sits longer than a week or two.

Ken, don't hold back; let your true feelings out! Apparently, One man's trash is another man's treasure. At least that's what wvorris & I feel as per his post. Go figure!
Have used boat less in the last 2 years than previous years but have yet to find a hard barnacle on hull at haul out. Slime, yes but powerwasher or a good run removes that. I may contact company to see if I could add Ciba's Irgarol to it to eliminate the slime. Maybe I can get them to add it to their product. Just my 2¢.

LOL. You know me Bob! A lot has to do with the water you store in. Im in a warm river with lots of plush green lawns. Growth is bad here. Our marina is an Aquaguard dealer. It's the base paint in our winter contract. Those who don't upgrade, learn fast that they should have.

Ken, what do you mean by....It's the base paint in our winter contract.

If you want to upgrade there is an additional charge.

Ken, I must be dumber than a bag of hammers. What does paint have to do with your winter contract? "It's the base paint in our winter contract."
I can see an add'l charge for other brands of Major brand paints as Aquaguard is relatively inexpensive by comparison.

Haul out, pressure wash, storage, bottom paint & relaunch are all included in our winter contract. Yes Aquaguard is very inexpensive, but you get what you pay for.

Wow; never heard of that arrangement. Is that just one of several contracts being offered? I pay $32/foot for all you mention except for painting the bottom. What does that service run you ?

It's pretty common around here. $48/ft. The only package available.
