The backing (black)on my cockpit carpeting is flaking off. Is there anything I can do to stop the flaking

you might want to get a carpet with no backing next time.

I just left it off as a test but never replaced it. Much easier to clean the fiberglass.

Try GE Silicone II (Black) Interior and Exterior Window Caulk (usually in the paint section of Depot). Spread it with a 3" flexible putty knife on the affected area. I am going on 7 years with my cockpit carpeting with no issues.

Since most original backing is intended to pass through excess water, now the water will take longer to dry, if you coat the entire back. But, for dripping wet swimmers amount of water, I did not notice any longer time to dry. And no mold issues.

Saves a lot of money in not having to replace.

I had the same problem.

Carpeting was in great shape but the rubber backing was sticking to the fiberglass. Solved the problem by getting a large piece of thin canvas (painters drop cloth) asd attaching it to the back of the carpeting. Used a 3M spray adhesive (not sure of the type). Solved the problem and lasted until I sold the boat.
