Bath vent

This winter I wanted to install an exhaust fan in the marine head on our boat.

I planned on putting a round chrome vent in the bulkhead behind the toilet itself. Then attach that vent to 3" flexible duct to a 3" bilge blower which will operate off a selonoid switch when the bathroom lights are turned on.

Can I tie wrap the exhaust end of that hose to the same louvered vent on the side of the boat that the engine bilge blowers are tied to?

My concern with having the ends of the two hoses (3 actually since there are two engine bilge blowers) in such close proximity is that the engine bilge blowers would create some sort of positive pressure on the head vent when it is not on and could therefore push bilge fumes into the cabin of the boat.

Bilge blowers are exhaust fans, they remove air from the bilge therefore lowering pressure.
Unless yours are installed backwards.
Could be noisy, why not use a computer muffin fan in the grill.

Yes, they lower it inside the engine compartment... but not at the point of exhaust... which would be right next to the point of exhaust for the marine head... thus my concern.

The bilge pump I intend to use is one I have new and unused... it's an rule model 140 and relatively speaking, it's fairly quiet.

Personally, I would not mess with bilge ventilation in any way. Often it is "barely adequate" to begin with and anything that might conceivably reduce it's effectiveness should be avoided ( in my opinion ).

I'd find another outlet for the exhaust air.

Mine just vents into the engine compartment. I have big air intakes so there's a path for the air to get out. Maybe not ideal but doesn't require another opening for a vent on the outside and doesn't interfere with the bilge blowers.

Bad idea to vent explosive vapors INTO the engine compartment.

Can you say, "beef and bean burrito?"... :)

Rick,
With the bathroom vent off u can certainly under certain conditions draw whats being discharged by the bilge blowers into the head. I would not tie into that louvered vent.

My exhaust fan vents into the cockpit, so I ask users to please just open the window.

The P/O of my boat also installed a Bathroom Vent Fan, or as he labeled it on the electric panel, a "Fart Fan". It exhaust right thru the side of the boat with a 3" cowling.

Attwood makes the cowling, it is part number 1364A1. It works great.

The fan is wired with a two position switch, that switches the direction of the fan, so it will pull air out of the head, or flip the switch and it pulls air into the head.

If you do go the cowling route, be careful of the placement of it. He placed the vent right at our dock level, and sometime with dock mounted fenders, it tends to knock the cover off the cowling. (That is why I have the part numbers, I have had to replace!)

I think you might be over thinking this...:). Probably not a problem with your original idea.
