Last night a 21' boat hit a moored construction barge by the TZ bridge. They were able to rescue 4 but two are still missing. We were out to dinner last night at saw a search helicopter and police boat North of the bridge. They called off the search after a couple of hours and will resume this morning. Why wold they possibly call off the search last night? It was perfect weather with a moon that was lighting up the water.

I was wondering the.same thing! And they didn't resume the search at first light, they went back out at 8:30 or so.

Must have hit that barge pretty hard!!

Is it safe to assume this was not a member of this site?

Baffling to me. The moon was out and the waters are about 80 degrees. . I saw the boat And from what i could see of it, in my opinion, they were not going at a hight rate of speed. Probably just enough to toss some overboard. Bow pulpit destroyed but a 21 foot boat hitting a barge at a high rate of speed would most likely have been totally destroyed.

She was going to be married in two weeks. People don't understand why I admonish those that boat at night. It's dangerous out there at night. You will never convince me of otherwise. Too many party animals too many obstructions, too many chances to take.
I don't know if this was a charter or what. Anyway, it's a very sad ending to a couple of life's cut short.

Was the lighting on the barge correct ?

Today I understand they added more lighting.....

According to initial reports, yes. However I believe they are only responsible to put one white light on bow and one on stern. On a black barge at night with the lights of the bridge in the back ground, the barge itself could easily be difficult to detect.

I spend a lot of time boating at night and really enjoy it. You do have to take some basic precautions and be more alert than during the day but it can be safe. Keeping your speed down and preserving your night vision is critical to safe nighttime operation.

I actually enjoy running at night...

Exactly, those barges should be lit up like Christmas trees.

Agree with both. But.....most of those involved are locals. Piermont & Nyack?? Who knows better about the bridge constuction? Just driving along 9w or from some of the hills in Nyack I see the barges & I've seen them move.

Sure more lights would be wonderful, but even without, even on a moonless night, you can see IF:

You are sober
You are paying attention
You are going slow
You have more than one set of eyes on the water because it IS limited visability!

Everyone of us have been on the water after dark. In my wildest dreams I cannot imagine a single one of us running bow first into a freaking barge. We are all far too responsible, accountable, experienced & informed!

Two are dead, four are injured and countless lives are forever changed. It was stupid, stupid, stupid! And a heavy price was paid!
