I don't know if everyone goes through this like I do:

September: Pay for next summer slip
my reaction: "damn, rates went up again"

Early January: yard bill comes for winter storage and layup
my reaction: "damn rates went up again, this is rediculous, why is this so expensive"

Late January: shrink wrap bill comes in
my reaction: "damn, it wasn't included in the other bill"

Late January: diesel mechanic provides estimate for work to be done
my reaction: "damn it's 25% higher than I thought, who can afford this hobby, what can I put off till next year and what can I do myself"

Late January: wife adds up estimates for recover couch, new window treatments, new carpeting
my reaction: "damn this is stupid, why am I doing this"

Late January: get estimate from electronics installer
my reaction: "damn that &%#%# pirate, he's as bad as the canvas guy, what is with this industry, I must be an idiot, how much money would I have otherwise..."

March: expect to be freezing my you know whats off doing the tasks I don't want to pay the yard to do.
Thinking: "why am i putting myself through this, i can't afford this" and similar thoughts

April: Boat gets splashed, cleaned shined up and we pick her up to go to the North Shore. First stop is the fuel dock.

After topping off the tanks at considerable cost, wife: do you know what the total boat cost was this winter?

my reaction: "nope, don't care"
 
If I thought about all the expenses I'd never have the boat! I prefer to be stupid :)
 
Dock fees, maintenance fees, fuel fees, etc, those don't bother me as much as when I add up the costs of the trips.

12 nights on boat in June and July will cost about $3K.
Wife and I can go on a cruise for that!
But it is fun!

I agree, for me it's a no brainer, but don't tell the admiral.
She likes the disco, the gourmet food, the waking up in a different exotic place, the clear blue water, etc.

For me, I will take the boat. I don't think she adds up the cost!
 
Dave, you just have to do both :)

I'm going to AC tomorrow and probably buying a new radar. That will be the first big boating expense of the season...
 
Funny, but I'm getting the same thing from my admiral -- probably becasue we picked up the boat in late September. So it's been all "outgo" and no fun. I've done sail in the past so I'm used to some of the expenses, but she's been a lake girl -- splash the party pontoon Memorial Day and you were good till Labor day. Maybe $40 for fuel.

Can't splash soon enough to build up some "good times"!<g>

I just had that conversation with myself.... The boat bills just keep coming ...

25 gallons antifreeze ( WTF )

15 bucks a batery to check em.... yea like any of the places do....

Id rather pay 15 bucks for them to charge it during the winter...
 
Funny thing is that every time a mechanic says "its no big deal", I'm shocked by what "no big deal" costs.

I hope I never hear one say "Uh oh, this is pretty bad"

Can't wait for spring.
 
Sold the bigger boat and bought a Fl condo and the expenses are about the same... except now I watch the boats go by and add up how much each one is/hour...
 
Walter.......I hope you didn't get in Daves hot tub !!!! It was dirty when I left there.
