Can I add a transom door?

I have a 1979 Trojan flybridge 26 and you currently have to climb over the transom and railing to get from the swim platform to the deck. It is at least 15" from the water line to the deck and I am wondering could I fabricate a thru transom door. My Dad's bat has one and both my wife and son like being able to walk from the transom onto the rear cockpit. I have done quite a bit of fiberglass fabrication. My real concern is would it detract from the boat. Or would it add value if done well?
