Planning to summer in the St Lawrence area we will be headed up the Hudson and over to Oswego via the canal system. I would appreciate any suggestions for must see or do activities on the way up.
We are undecided on best return route. Back track or circle down through Lake Champlain. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

If you have no draft or clearance issues, I would vote to come back down on Champlain. This way you mix it up. IMHO the scenery along the Champlain is better. Once on the St. Lawrence, make sure you stop at all the castles especially Bolt and Singer. There are old boat museums as well, one on Clayton I think. Bonnie Castle was a good stop, try and get backed into a slip on the peninsula. There are good stops on the Canadian side also.

Coming up from Md. there is quite a bit along Jersey as well.

Afternoon,
You have a wonderful summer ahead of you. If you're going to be in the 1000 islands for the summer, plan on a side trip up the Rideau Canal. World Heritage site, plenty of history. You can either run up to Ottawa,ON from Kingston, ON and back the same way or go from Kingston to Montreal, PQ and from there, back up the St. Lawrence or down the Richelieu Canal which connects to the Champlain/Erie Canal system. Many choices. Keep a VERY close eye on your charts and depths in the St. Lawrence. It can go from 50' to 2' in less than a boat length.

We boat out of Stony Point, on the Hudson.

We have done the trip south to the Inner Harbor.

We have also gone north, through Lake Champlain, up to the St. Lawrence, past the 1000 islands and over to Toronto. We came back across the lake to Oswego, then east on the Erie canal.

Coming up from the Chesapeake, we stopped at Cape May, and stayed at Schooner Island Marina. It is a clean, nice place, low fuel prices and close to groceries, restaurants and the beach.

I recommend fueling up in either Manasquan or Belmar before getting into the Hudson where fuel prices are much higher.

Navigating the Hudson is very easy, for the most part the water is deep enough, and the channel is well marked.

The best place to anchor is off the beach on the north side of Croton Point. We like Bowline pond across the river from Croton, but you need local knowledge to get in. Someone from this forum will be able to guide you in, if you desire. Fuel will be available at Haverstraw marina (Tarrytown marina also has fuel, but they are always much more expensive). From Haverstraw, a nice stop is at Shadows Marina or Hyde Park marina, and then a walk across the Hudson on the Walkway over the Hudson.

Kingson, on Rondout Creek is always a good stop.

Navigation gets a little trickier north of Kingston, but if you stay in the well marked channel you'll have no problems.

There are a few marinas in Albany, then you're into the canal. A number of towns provide free tie-up along their bulkheads, and most of the locks have places to tie up for the night.

Lake Champlain is beautiful, plan on spending a few days enjoying it.

We went from Champlain to Sorel, and stayed at the marina right where you come out onto the St. Lawrence. You will probably be coming the other way, which is smart, as you'll have the current with you.

As you guys suggest I think we will run the NY loop in a clockwise manner - out the Erie Canal, up the Rideau and back down through Lake Champlain.

Thanks again for the information.

Let us know when you are passing through the Haverstraw Bay area.

Greg those are some fantastic pics. You described the trip to us but I did not realize how cool it was. Loved the castle.... BK.. :--)))

I'm surprised he used so much, the canals are all basically idle speed.

Greg, love the pictures, the stay in the castle must have been awesome. Did you dock at the castle?

I thought Benny was dead.
What a great post about your trip Greg. If I ever do that be sure I will be talking to you and Mike.

Hey kbeachy, if you do your trip please do look me up. I run the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, which is at the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. So you'll be traversing a good chunk of my coverage area. We have quite a few member marine businesses between Erie lock 7 and Champlain lock 4. If you get a copy of the new Embassy Cruising Guide (Maptech) you'll see a two page layout that I put in that book, with marine services in the southern Saratoga area. Make sure its the newest edition.

And PLEASE pay attention to the channels - water levels were a bit low and two people I know hit rocks in the Hudson River last year, that will screw up your trip for sure!

My contact info is: Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County pete at southernsaratoga.org 518-522-7251 (cell) website www.southernsaratoga.org
