I am tired of the never ending battle with canvas snaps. I haven't found any of them to be problem free and since most of my canvass rarely come off I really don't need the rapid removal feature of the usual fittings that never turn out to be rapid removal.
My current focus is those flat twist type fittings that are expensive today and just don't last. Flapping canvas is the usual reason it is destroyed not just wind so I am thinking about some sort of small bolts and washers to replace those fittings.
Anyone ever seen anything done like that???

No, but I like the plan. There may be cosmetic issues.

I actually like the lace down type for semi-permanent canvas.
 
I agree If I had a stud on the boat a wing nut or acorn nut wouldn’t look any worse than those twist fittings that look like junk and come loose in few months. The area I first want to replace happens to be attached to aluminum and FG panels without backside access, so some sort of blind stud or nut is required
 
Bruce, I feel your pain. let us know how your tests work out. I hate snaps the worst. About had a conniption when the canvas guy put a bunch in to hold down a windlass cover a few weeks ago.

If there was some way to flush mount nuts or some other threaded female fittings to the boat, you could glue 3/4" wide strips of plastic to the edge of the canvass and drill holes to align to your flush nuts. You can use thumb screws to hold down the canvass. There are a few 'nuts' but require access to the backside.
 
I was wondering if there is such a thing as a stud mounted on a flat surface that I could attach to the boat that put the stud trough the canvass and use a washer and nut.
 
I don't like the idea of things sticking up that could catch my fishing line.[:I] That's whu I thought of the flush mount nut. There's especially one I like but it works best if you can put a strip of wood behind the fiberglass. You can always use a round head screw/bolt instead of thumb screws.

I couldn't find the specific ones I was thinking of but S6-S8 ans M6-M8 are similiar.

A friends new boat has small bungys attached to the canvas and small rasied buttons they hook on attached to the boat. Only on the stern end of the canvas, after all the snaps are buttoned the bungys make battoning down the last bit of canvas less troublesome. Catching fishing line would be the least of the potential painful things that might get snagged on protruding threaded studs. aesthetically, it probably won't look to great. And you would have to have alot of extra wing nuts as I'm sure many will end up in the drink.
 
Hmmmm, I don't understand. I have "flat twist fittings" which anchor the corners with snaps all along in between. They are 17 yrs old and have never had to be replaced. In fact I've had to replace the canvas, eisenglas and screens, but never the fittings or snaps attached to the boat! And they all stay snapped when I am underway.

Maybe the quality is poor now, but my 17 yr old ones work great every time!

Actually Sea Ray uses those bungies. They are hooked first, then you snap. I think they were designed to take some of the pressure off of the snaps.
