Canvas Sewing

I learned to sew as a kid. I grew up in a large family, so if you wanted /needed something sewn, you either waited for Mom to find time or you did it yourself. I even taught my wife to sew shortly after we got married. She and I have made drapes etc. But, more to the point, I replaced all the canvas and cushions on my previous boat, a 25' cabin cruiser, and have repaired the canvas on my present boat. Next winter, I plan on replacing all the canvas and adding a camper back. There's nothing unmanly about saving thousands of dollars by doing it yourself. P.S. I use a 20-year old Kenmore machine. Before I started sewing canvas, reupholstering cushions, and making curtains - I did a lot of research. Industrial machines with a walking foot are indeed the best approach.

But I also found that the old direct-drive Singer machines could handle this work, and a walking foot can be used on these machines as well. The 15-91 machine is a good model to use and was made from the late 30's until the late 50's (if my memory is correct). I ended up with a 1936 and a 1956 model and they do a teriffic job and my cost was really low compared to a modern industrial machine. And I would believe that it's a good bit stronger than the new Singer 500A.

It handles several layers of canvas with ease, and can do leather pretty well too. Plus, this classic machine is simply a piece of art!
