How do I search on Capitol Transmission Posts ?

I'm having difficulty getting my oil level correct on my Strbd side- I have M-105's.
my boat is a 1989 45 viking powered by DD 691 TIB's

I'm either measure to low or to high when I check it with the dip stick.

Also, my port side shaft rotates slowly when the engines are in neutral while the starboard side doesn't. Which one is normal ? I believe it's been that way since I purchased the boat back in 08.

Tough call. I have been the route. Try here. It looks like a newer website to me. I recall using Pacific Rim for a manual in the past.

I have HE10200's and I check the oil without the engine running. I pull the stick, wipe it clean, carefully insert it again and wait a few seconds. Then I remove it and check it. It sounds like you have a little "clutch drag" on the port side. I would check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge via a T fitting inserted just before the high pressure oil goes into the selector valve (if all of this is exposed on the M-105).

By any chance is the present HP-10500 reduction gear essentially the same as your M-105?

(Just a little farther into boatbum's website:)

That manual says run the engine for a few minutes, then stop engine and check level. I don't have Capitol gears but find it difficult to get a good reading of fluid level on the stick unless I pull the stick , wipe, reinsert FULLY , pull again and carefully roll it on a clean paper towel or rag and see where the rag has absorbed it next to the stick. Once you get level just right warm , you could check it cold later and scratch a cold Full mark on the stick if different from warm so you can check anytime after the Transmission has been used at least once after replacing fluid. If too high you can always pull out a slight amount at a time with a small fluid transfer hand pump until level is aces.

But you aren't referring to levels that vary as if you suspect a cooler leak are you?

I'll do all of the above.

I don't suspect a cooler leak or I'd have oil showing up I the water from the exhaust .

When I tested it today it was almost empty on the stick then I ran the engine put it in fwd and reverse a few times leaving it in gear I then shutdown the engine and checked the level again and it was way over full. I talked to a guy Chris jones a guru on these transmissions and he said not to worry about overfilling but I'm not liking the fact that it sometimes shows almost empty ?

Anyone know where to get a manual or documentation for these transmissions ?

tried it Boatbum-- I called this AM but no answer

and No its not the same as the m105 but thank you

I'll go to the boat and get the manual I purchased from a place in B.C.. I think it was Pacific Rim.

BTW If you are on the East Coast they are in B.C. which is West coast. Try later today?

Thnx ,
I talked to them and they referred me to Chris Jones rb2@gr5t 843-822-1019. He's one of 2 places in the world that work on these

Every lead I've used goes back to Chris. He has a great reputation

He's been very helpful so far

It was a plugged breather on the top of the tranny--- they are located on the upper right side of the tranny. capitol attached about a 1 foot hose with a bend in it so water can't get in.

once i corrected the problem everything is perfect.

thanks for the responses Sandy and boatbum

Glad I could help. Nice having some piece of mind isn't it?

Considering the worst case senerio yes.
Hopefully this post will help some else in the future

Glad to hear it turned out to be something minor and relatively painless, and thanks for the follow-up report.
Back to happy boating!
