I'm 98% certain that the interior trim in our boat is finished with Cetol. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to what color it is? The trim at the main hatch was sanded by the previous owner and is ready for re-coating. I'd like to match what's already there or at least come close.

Thanks!

You don't see Cetol on interiors much. And while it's hard to tell from the pictures, that doesn't look like Cetol to me.

I use a good grade/brand of one part poly on almost all of my interior refinishing work. Including the floors. Easy to work with, fast drying, long lasting, inexpensive (cheaper than Cetol), water and alcohol proof. Just sand your wood down, stain to match and apply a few coats of poly.

I've always preferred oiling my wood----especially the interior. Usually one coat a year is all it takes. If it has never been oiled before, it may need a second coat a week or two later.

Bill and Flutter -

Would poly/varnish or oil leave such a mess on the adjoining laminate? This is a 100% crop, so it looks much worse than it does to the naked eye, but it's still bad. (Right side shows the slop; left side is a shadow.)

I just came up from my workshop where I was redoing a bunch of teak. I am using Cetol Light and it looks identical to the picture. By the third coat it gets to be that deep color. I use the Cetol on the outside teak and oil on the inside teak. I used to use oil outside and it looked great when done but I didn't have the time to keep it up.

I think Cetol has more of an orange hue. I can't imagine why anyone would use anything but oil indoors. It is not exposed to weather so should last a long time.

Ron, the original Cetol (Cetol Marine) is more orange. Within the past eight or ten years, Cetol introduced two new colors: Cetol Light and Cetol Natural Teak. If this is Cetol, it's one of those. I'd be inclined to use oil on the interior, too, but I'm not going to sand and start over - the existing trim is in very good condition. I just need to do something with the wood at the main entrance hatch, which was already prepped by the previous owner (but the owner before him did the interior, so he doesn't know what it is either). It abuts the existing trim, so I'd like to do something that doesn't scream screwup.

I use the Cetol light on my swim platform, and it still has a more orange look than that. Or it's darker, something. It looks different - yours looks better frankly. I can't say about the "natural" as I have not used it.

Jim, you were right - it's Cetol Light. I tested a small section today and there's no doubt.

Another of life's little mysteries solved.
