Talk to a boatyard which does bottom painting. I think they will say the always sandblast first.

If the current bottom paint is in OK condition, you should only have to sand it down a bit removing any loose paint, flakes, chips etc. Take all necessary precautions because the dust is very toxic. You should also make sure there is not a lot of paint buildup, but be careful not to sand too aggressively and damaged the gel coat.

These days with ablative anti-fouling it's common to use different colors so you can tell when the paint is worn off... With hard paint it shouldn't really matter. I switch from black to red and back again as the mood strikes me. I don't think the fish really give a flip.

Like Mike said. I don't even bother to scuff up surface; never had a problem with adhesion. I believe I'm correct on this........OK ablative over hard epoxy; NO GO, epoxy over soft ablative. Similar to latex over alkyd ok but not alkyd over latex.

Thanks all....I was going to just scuff it up a little anyways and I knew about how toxic it was. I've been in the marine field for over 28 years but with nothing this small. I just bought a 32' Trojan and I work for a living on a 480' ship. Kind of have a little background here. Thanks again for all the advice.
