Soon after I bought my 95 Sea Ray 300 dancer, I had a battery explode and spray acid all over one v-drive tranny and surrounding area. I neutralized and cleaned as soon as it was detected, but it was on there for at least a couple of days. Now if I get the painted areas wet they look fine, black. Or in the case of the gelcoat a darker grey. Problem is, as soon as they dry a rusty looking maroon haze appears even on some areas of the grey gelcoat.

Any ideas? I want a clean engine room/bilge and this is driving me crazy...

There might still be some residue left behind. Start with a long bristle hand brush and use water W/Simple Green. See how it comes up. After it dries, try a little wax on the gel coat. Only do a little spot because if there is still some residue left behind, the wax will just make it harder to remove.
