I am planning on reemoving the pin stripping on my 27 sea ray and re-doing it this year

I am looking for some suggestion for this. I want to try and stay way from using a heat gun. I was going to try goo off. Any other suggestions?

This worked great for us:

3M 07498,Stripe Off Wheel 4 in x 5/8 in
Solid wheel designed for removal of vinyl striping tapes, decals, graphics and double sided molding tapes. Use on tools with 4,000 RPM . M.O.S. - optimum speed is 2,000 RPM plus or minus 200

Those stripe wheels work great! They smell like butterscotch when they get hot, but that's just a side benefit. Nice clean surface when done, just wipe down and you're ready to put on new stripes.

I didn't find these wheels until I had my 3rd boat. They are the only wat to go and they won't hurt the gelcoat. Takes the graphic plus most of the goo off. Like they said above, just wipe it down with acetone or paint thinner and you're done.

Are you worried that a heat gun will burn the gel coat? I use my wife's hot comb. It's not as hot as a heat gun and does a great job. Clean up is with acetone, but very little is required. Did this just the other day to get rid of the outdated state registration stickers. Took about 2 minutes per sticker.

removing a couple of stickers is a lot different than removing old beat up pinstripes off an entire boat.

Having owned 3 Sea Rays, I've replaced lots of stripes. Used the hair dryer on each one. It really does work well. The Michigan stickers actually have a better glue on them than the stripes.

I did my 260 sea ray last year and used the eraser wheel. It was old and cracked and it worked great. Saved a lot of time. If I was going to do it again I would use the eraser wheel. I used my cordless drill. I used an electric drill, but if started to burn the gelcoat.

sbw1, I used to cut my grass with a push mower. Worked great. Used to see my neighbors zooming along on the lawn tractors. Thier grass looked just as good as mine. Why on earth you guys resist the graphics eraser is beyond me! Go to a body shop and watch them remove vinyl graphics. They aren't using a heat gun and a razor blade. Welcome to 2007!

dritter, how was your electric drill different? Higher RPM? Not sure why it burned but the cordless didn't.

Why so hot? I'm actually quick to adopt new technology. The reason I used a heat gun (no razor blade btw)is because it worked so well. I could remove and clean a bootstripe line on one side of a 37' boat in about 10-15 minutes. In another 15 minutes the new stripe was on. Eventually got a boat that has a single gel coated stripe that does not require a touch up every time you nudge a piece of junk in the water. The erasers are a little too messy for my application (registration stickers on a windshield).

The electric did have more rpm. I could run the cordless on high with out a proplem.

Not hot at all, especially without the heat gun! I just don't understand why you would suggest somebody not use the easiest, fastest way available to get the job done. I wouldn't use it for a registration sticker either, but great for the bigger jobs.

I hadn't heard of the stripe eraser wheel until I read these posts. Last week I bought one and used it with a 1000 RPM electric drill to remove a decal on my transom.

It literally came off in seconds. I used a little mineral spirits to wipe the little bit of sticky residue and was done.

Great little product.
