What type of wood do I use to frame the deck of my boat? It is a 1965 Hatteras that I had to replace the fuel tanks. Also what is right for the deck itself? If I use plywood it has to be a marine grade or can it be exterior plywood? I was also told to glass both sides ,is this correct?

Pressure treated is the best wood to use. If it is over a normally dry area, you can get away with just resin coating the underside. If you are timber framing supports for the deck, use pressure treated lumber then get a couple good coats of Gelcoat or paint on it.

The original Mfgs wood would be easiest to recommend but even then, it may have been the cheapest to use back then. They were all cheap compared to now. Mahogany has been a traditional marine wood as well as White Oak and of course Teak. I'd guess Mahogany because it was plentiful and cheap. The make up of Mahogany allows it to absorb resin better than Oak. Also, depending on what you're constructing, you can seal the exterior surfaces and leave the interior surfaces raw wood which allows it to readily dry out if it's in a large well circulated area. Of course if it's in an area that needs to be sanitary looking, seal and paint it.

Paul,
PT wood, is it all D. Fir/Pine that's pressure treated or do they ever use hardwoods.

Charlie, most southern yellow pine. Hardwoods arent used because they are costly and are mostly used for their appearance and the PT would ugly them up.

Pressure treated wood is not ussally recomened as fiberglass wont adhere well to it. the best wood to use would be douglas fir. as for plywood use marine grade plywood or for a less expensive method use MDO sign board. It is as good as marine grade plywood but esier to finish and it is a outdoor grade and alotless money
